Gift for wife:DS or PSP?
Hi,
I've been thinking of buying her a gaming handheld since she just started to like playing games. With both handhelds are quite mature nowadays, which one do you think is better for her? For me, I prefer PSP a little bit more than DS because of the graphics and multimedia capabilities. However, my wife may like cute games like nintedogs. Are there any cute games for PSP as well? She also likes RPG and action types of games. Thanks for any inputs |

Having played both, I would go with the PSP.

I would say the PSP due to the other things the system can do such as play movies (both ones that you have done, and UMD movies), play MP3, and with firmware upgrades watch streaming TV, and internet browsing. The DS can do this too (not the browsing/tv part), but it requires purchasing extra hardware that frankly may never show up on the NorthAm shores.
As for the games, thankfully (err.. umm) there is no game on the PSP that is like Animal Crossing or Nintendogs. Let's hope it stays that way too. There will be a game called Neopets coming out in February though, and the PSP also has The Sims 2 which unlike the DS port is much closer to the PC version. There are a couple good RPGs on the system like Popolocrois (Pop-o-lo-kwrah), and Kingdom of Paradise, with more coming next year. As the year goes on you will start to see more and more games come out for the system, but for now it's kinda slow. |

If she just wants a game system go with the DS because it has better games. If she has an interest in being able to listen to music or watch UMD movies (a less focused portable multimedia desire) then get the PSP.
Or just get her a nice ring, cause girls love jewelery more than electronics

Personally, I'd go for the DS, as you can't beat mario kart...ever...
...and bust a move is coming ![]() But if PSP if you think she'd like the extra media capabilities of the PSP, then be sure and include a good sized memory stick and some good headphones |

Mario Kart and Nitendogs are pretty sweet, but PSP also. You can do so much with it besides games. I also recommend the giga pack at EB for 50$ more if she's goin to have music and videos on it.
Edit: What kind of games does she like? Last edited by SFOSOK; Dec 18, 2005 at 09:38 PM. |

While some of these might be must buy games, these are some fo the titles she might like to play (on top of Popolocrois, and Sims 2): Mercury (puzzle)(just note that it can get fustrating, but very damn addictive) Bust-A-Move (out Feb.1.06)(I have the Jap import.. very addictive)(puzzle/action) Untold Legends (rpg)(not too bad when played with someone) Ape Escape (action/platform)(exactly like the PS1 version, not too shaby) P.Q.: Practical Intelligence Quotient (late Jan.06)(puzzle) Daxter (Feb.1.06)(action/platform)(looks fantastic) Crash Tag Team (racing)(not too shabby a game, actually) Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee (sports)(Another "MUST BUY" game) Virtua Tennis (sports)(silky smooth tennis, plays real nice) Tokobot (puzzle)(hard to describe this one. best to google it) Lord of the Rings Tactics (strategy)(tactical rpg) If she's into racing I would also try out Wipeout Pure, and Burnout Legends. If you can try to pick up the PSP Giga pack as it includes the 1Gig memory stick. One thing about the DS is that it has a lot of titles right now that are very top rated. In fact, my DS library outwieghs my PSP 2-1. As the year goes on though the PSP looks to be getting some very top rated games of it's own. I'd have probably recommended the DS for games alone, but since the PSP can do so much more, that's what gives it the nod for me. |

Sounds like she's looking for mostly games, so I'd have to go with the ds. It just has better games. Get her mario kart, meteos, and nintendogs to start with
![]() Off topic for ds owners, I'm getting one soon, should I invest in any screen protectors, and if so which ones? Or, is the touch screen durable enough so that there won't be heavy scratching?

i'd get a protector...one of those static film ones....the demo unit at CC was worn to the point of going blurry...granted it was played 12 hours a day 7 days a week, but you get the idea

Edit: I should also mention that you can find these things on eBay for a couple bucks cheaper, but you will pay more due to shipping costs unless you buy in bulk. Edit: PSP Exim Protectors are HERE btw. This is a MUST BUY for the PSP. Just like the iPod nano the PSP screen is easily scratched.

I bought some modifiable screen protectors that work on anything. They come stuck to a grid so you can measure up on your screen and cut the protector to the size you need. It's all very easy and they work for anything you need to protect; phone, pda, mp3 player, psp, ds.
I think fellowes makes them and they were kinda expensive but at the rate I use them it looks like they'll last more than a year.

Thanks for the info guys. I really didn't want to use protectors that are stuck on with some sort of goop, which can have airbubbles and other problems. Those are great suggestions tipstaff and i will definitely look into them.

if u stick with the stylus that comes with the unit, dont press hard (like the kids no doubt do to the demo units in EB etc) it will be fine ![]() As for the OP, id say DS, it has nintendogs, my gf who doesnt even like games likes nintendogs, its just a very unique hand held game. The PSP is awesome too but if she wont use it for mp3, movies etc etc, DS all the way. |

when applying those screen protectors, line up the long side, and slide them on with a "squeegee implement" (ruler, pen, etc) and you'll avoid bubbling

Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought her a PSP (with 3 games: hot shots golf, ape's academy, and ridge racer) in the end because of the better graphics and the multimedia. Since she doesn't have an ipod yet, she can use the PSP for music as well.
After browsing a bit more about PSP, I'm a bit surprised that it can actually do a lot more than just a gaming handheld. Very interesting. I would say PSP has a better future than DS but DS probably has better games now. |

I'd say they don't directly compete. PSP is always going to be better at being a multimedia device; that's what its purpose is. But the DS will always be the better machine when it comes down to pure gaming. That's what happens when you specialize, you do it better than the jack-of-all-trades.

I think The DS is owned inthe Gaming department also, all they really have are the titles. They need to make PD for it, then I will buy it.
