For people with WinXP x32:
Type mat_specular 0 in the HL2's console, this helps to avoid shiny stones and other shiny things...

What a mess. I'm so glad I finished the game long before this messup. Don't think I could have played it in the state it's in now.

Nope I have 32/32 and it is totally screwed up from the last time I played it.

Reflections look like ASS... All kinds of other things that look like ASS...

This is with everything maxed out in the options- it looks the same no matter what. I guess I could do that console command, but then I am sure things that re supposed to look shiny will look flat.

That looks like crap to me.. The water used to look much better. I have some older shots around from when I had a 9700pro that looks 100 x better. That water in your shot looks like mud.. It is supposed to look like water.

Again, there is definitely a problem.. buy who cares-- it's HL2 right, we are used to it being messed with constantly, and being messed up with constant patches. -well I am anyway.

ATi's shader compiler seems to have a problem with Source's water shader since catalyst 5.7.
But VALVe has made it perfect and has added a new "shiny" water and other things bug.

The water now looks very reptitive I find.. And it has nothing to do with drivers since it happened from on day to another without cat changes... Only steam updates.

Yeah it looks normal because those shots are FROM A LONG time AGO.... an example of when it looked good- like I said in the post.

I have some other screens- this first one is with AI and HDR OFF and it looks identical to the first screen I posted.

HDR control seems to do absolutely nothing in HL2.

Notice the texture that doesn't move in the "background of the reflection".. Damn- it looks horrible..

Ok, now look at the Lost Coast:

Absolute suckage..

With HDR full-

resizer messed that one up.. still you can see the ugly rock wall..

The water does not get the HDR reflection like it did....

Original HDR full:

Another original- good HDR reflection...

Again- full HDR on water reflections when LC came out:

Now with "BLOOM".. Oh man- Valve totally screwed up here...

just took a shot with my X1800 systems and "full bloom" looks perfictly fine
to me.... It (the .png) to big for image shack I'll have to compress
the image to jpg

EDIT:

Here is the the reduced quailty images

try forceing you dirextX level my best guess is the game is incorrectly
trying to use PS 3.0 on you ps 2.0 cards (or something)

I'm guessing the problem is your cards do not support full HDR.

Mine did before- look at my post above- and the pictures in lost coast with "original"... it is full HDR.

Even Neons last pic-- the water reflection is not as bright as the sky.. in my original lost coast full HRD the water reflection is as bright as the sky..

I think it is valve's fault..

original loast coast on X800XL- looks good-

x1800 full HDR- (now)

Not to mention how messed up a lot of other things are.. I can't believe they would leave the game in this state without an immediate patch to at least put it back to the way it was when it first came out..

Everyone including 32bit versions.... download the same amount.. it's no larger...

You simply startup half life 2 or the lost coast, it'll detect that you are running in native 64bit mode... and run in 64bit mode automatically.

hmm i wonder why Counter strike source isnt 64x bit native yet.

only HL2 when loading brings up a little box at the top saying its running in x64 mode enabled.

but source doesnt.. :o
