Game developers......take note
The current "buzz word" is HDR lighting....
...my thought for the evening: why not make HDR darkness? Sounds dumb at first, but hear me out. When you go into a dark room, your eyes take a moment or 3 to adjust, and over time, you get mre dialated, and see better and pick up more, and a flash of light will totally screw this up and "night blind" you for a few moments. This would be a crazy cool feature to add to games, and while I have little to no idea how HDR works, it seems to me if it is truly based off of a lighting engine, that it could be spoofed through negative values, or something? you could even use both HDR light and dark in games like doom or splinter cell, where you have flashlights, per say. In multiplayer, you shine your flashlight down the scope of a guy sniping from across a field, and thus, you can run across the field while he sees purple spots for 15-20 seconds before becomign re-acquainted to the darkness, and the longer you spend in the dark, the better you can see. What do you, the pople of DH think of my late night rant of insanity/brilliance? Would you be stoked to see HDR Darkness mixed instead of just HDR Lighting? |

I think it would be interesting to see in games in order to furthur immerse the gamer into the game, thus bringing an overall more enjoyable experience to the user. I could see games such as F.E.A.R. and Doom 3, and the upcoming horror game "Condemned" putting this to good use, if at all possible.

Darkness is just low levels of light so the possibility is already there. I haven't played CoD2 with a capable card but reviews mentions that an effect of that type comes in play when moving between dark and bright areas. We'll probably see more of it in future games using current HDR capable hardware.

This idea is brilliant. I'd love it in MP games. Just flash someone with a flashlight and disable his eyes for a moments. It's tremendous, what cool features this thing could include.

If memory serves that is also in HL2 at least I thought I saw this in the lost coast demo.

lots of games have light blooms now, yes, where you run out of a dark room into the sun and everything is god awful bright for a second or 2.
But I am yet to find one where it works the other way around. Like, in HL2, run into a cave, and not be able to see shit for a few seconds. Or in doom 3, shine a flashlight in someone's eyes in a dark room, and they see purple spots and get a little hazy for a second |
