The Longest Journey and AA

Picked up a copy of TLJ for my wife and AA will not work for my laptop's 9600pro. I've looked around the net and have found that AA cannot be enabled in TLJ unless having an old exe. file from an old build of the game...soo I figure I come to you guys to see if you can help me So does anyone have any ideas on how I can smooth out those 1999 edges?? I've also heard that with an nVidia card AA can be forced...bla

Thanks again

Yea there was some file called dx something or whatnot, and with the newest patch there is a newer version that for some reason takes anti-aliasing away from the game. So what you have to do is find an older version of that file (really not sure what it's called, something to do with directx or something though) and replace the newer one so that way you can enable AA and it will work

If you need further help I will be glad to help

I have a very early version of the game installed. I wonder if that will work?

EDIT: One thing that was suggested is outputting the game to a TV. If you have TV-OUT as an option for your video card, that may give a more pleasant image if AA can't be applied otherwise. As for patches to do the AA read the following:

OK, check out this thread over here:

http://forums.longestjourney.com/sho...t=antialiasing

I think it's on page 3 of that thread, but here's the full scoop:

I've got some good news! Thanks to Edge_343 a fix for AA on ATI cards has been found. If you've read this thread you'll have seen that I've got build 142 of TLJ and Edge has build 136; my AA does not work, but his does. It appears that somewhere between build 138 and 142 some changes were made to the file DX_Module.dll, and these changes broke AA.

By replacing two files, DX_Module.dll and game.exe, you can get AA to work with your game. **Before I go any further, let me say that you would be wise to backup/rename any files that you are going to replace (just in case it doesn't work).** You can get a build-138 DX_Module.dll from the demo that's available from the TLJ website. However, this file will not work with a build-142 game.exe, so you will need an older game.exe. The reason these files are incompatible is that build 142 has a feature called "Enable Time Skip" [image - 45KB]. If you try to run the game with these two files you'll get an error message [image - 21KB]. So if you currently use this feature, you won't have it anymore after you use this fix.

If you're following this so far you'll realize that to make TLJ run with this older version of DX_Module.dll you'll need a different game.exe. The problem is that the game.exe from the demo won't work because it only lets you play one "scene" - not the full game (even if you have the full game installed). You'll have to find a real game.exe from build 136, or presumably 138. The other thing about builds 136 and 138 is that they don't have the sound tweak options available in the "Advanced" dialog box [image - 34KB]. If you currently use these settings to make the game work, you may have problems with this fix. I haven't needed to use these settings, though, so I don't know for sure. You could try changing them by manually editing the preferences.ini file (again, backup any files before you mess with them).

That's all there is to it. Once you've replaced those two files, turn on AA, and TLJ should look a lot smoother. By way of a disclaimer: I can't promise that this will work for you - your mileage may vary. If you've got any questions...ask! I can answer one right now, though - I can't provide these files to anyone at this time. If Funcom gives me permission I'll let you know. As I said above, DX_Module.dll is available from the demo. As for game.exe: you might try feeling lucky on a google search for "longest journey no cd crack." Also, it may be possible to successfully use files from other builds. I've only tried files from builds 136, 138, and 142. Hope this works for everyone.

edit - Thought of two other things:
As far as I can tell, save games will still work after this.
Also, if you try to use build-136 versions of both files (at least with a build-142 install), the game will start, but it will crash as soon as you get control of April. Using the build-138 DX_Module.dll fixes this.

I was working on setting up a profile and testing this out when my Ray Adam's ATT went kaput on me. (Posted about it under the Windows Drivers thread.)

I do have a download of the older files. There's a link later in that linked thread above. However, it's the 136 version of Game.exe and 138 version of the DX file. I still need to test it out to see if it works, though.

Here's my update on attempted AA:

I've installed the latest Omega drivers along with the Ray Adam's ATT (it's working well with this driver so far) and I've set up a Game Profile with highest 3D/DirectX settings possible.

I'm using the 136 version game.exe and the 138 version DX_Module.DLL file.

So far, however, I see no improvement in April's image nor in the others. The backgrounds are still very nice, though.

Also, after starting a new game as well as starting from a previous saved game, I've had no crashes with these files installed.

So, while I may not have good news on my end, your mileage may vary.

If you want these files, I can post them for a limited time for download, OR send them via email. PM me if you want to work out a way to get them.

If you have the 2 CD version of the game, FunCom has just released a patch that fixes some problems with Saved Games not loading correctly. The patch brings the game to version 1.56.

Yea, but the patch still wont do anything for AA I just picked the 2cd version of game up for $2.50 But it looks like this is another one of those games that you can't use AA with an ATI card All the fixes that are out there are for the old 4cd version.
