3dMark06 is 3dSUCK

Wow I was really disappointed with this year's 3dmark. They didn't even have a new proxycon and they only added in a fairy to the nature one.

Plus my awesome card I won not even a year ago on driverheaven was chopping along at 7 frames.

I think they've lost it, what with the recent opengl criticisms, "professional" version for hundreds of dollars, lack of originality this year, and another tired graphically incremental release. It's clear why these things come out now; not to benchmark your card but to make futuremark buckets of money.

maybe you should read about it first...?

you get three results..

one shows how the gfx performs in SM3.0
one shows how the gfx performs in SM2.0
one shows how good your cpu is at "rendering" the physics..

you should compare your SM2.0 score to other people.. your card cant do SM3.0, so dont be dissapointed regarding the overall score. your x800xl still kicks at SM2.0..

Proxycon IS new. The movement and the dudes in it are the same, but look at the graphics. Same goes for the other tests that look the same. 3dmark is for testing, not for looking and saying "woow look at all the new graphics".

I'm not gonna praise a full synthetic benchmark.. first of all, it's synthetic. Cpu score is f'ed up -dualcore doubles performance <- doesnt in real life. Intel cpus are in general better - but are they in real games?

I know proxycon is new. I noticed all the new shadows and textures and stuff. The problem is, every other year not only did they push the graphics they came up with some cool new way to show you. By using the same stuff as last year with more bling, it shows the effort they put into this thing. They simply don't care enough about it to give us new eye candy. It's just "oh we'll add 2000 more shadows to proxycon and call it a day".

not in any defense of futuremark, but the other releases were every other year rather than yearly, albeit GPU technology and technology all around is moving at a faster pace......

It really doesn't matter, 3dmark has a deal with pc manufactuers and hardware supliers to make you (the consumer) spend more because you get a crapy score. Thats why they release one every year, not tell you how good or bad your system is, but to convince you that yours is out of date so you buy and keep upgrading.

i thought it was a pretty good improvement, actually.

I don't care if they invented new "stories" or just re-animated old ones....they added a ton of new tech to it and went the aquamark tri-score mode of scoring, which is much better.

hah i hear ya on that one. ill upgrade the day that i can only run games at 1024x768, no AA/AF, and medium/low settings only.

sadly with the way things are going, that day may be comeing faster then i hoped.

I've got to agree that I was quite disappointed with this release. I mean, how many times do you want to watch that same Proxycon battle with the BIG GUN and the HUGE TANK falling over on top of a guy that you can't see it hit him? LOL!

Granted, there was some new 'footage' if you want to call it that....at "0" FPS! (For me, anyway.

I have all the copies of 3DMark going back to '99. (Wasn't there one before that?) The big anticipation was being able to see new things that your new/newer video card and system were capable of doing that wasn't possible before. Of course, much of this new content was based on newer versions of DirectX. (AS pointed out in the link above, FutureMark has completely avoided any OpenGL tests. It definitely would be nice to see how ATi cards perform under OGL stress tests.)

Anyway, while new features were added to old content, I have to tend to agree that it shows some laziness on the part of the developers. Maybe even a lack of vision.

Maybe next year we get to see that big tank actually fall on the guy.

I find the simple fact that a SLI 7800GTX with a AMD 4800+ X2 OCed that can't even score 30 FPS in all the tests and the CPU test STILL doesn't reach 1 FPS overkill.... Just plain overkill....

I'd like to see another benchmark like 3dMark2001. Even though it was really long, I enjoyed watching all the different engine types run. I liked Aquamark3 as well.

3DMark03, 05, & now 06 all just test the cutting edge which is only on the newest cards can even output. SM3.0 is nice, but is no way indicative of how your card will perform in game.

My 9000pro got ~1200 in 3dMark03 but played games fine. My 9800np(overclocked) got ~2300 in 3dMark05 but played games great. And now my X800XL gets ~1700 (800gfx, 900cpu) in 3dMark06 and it plays games without any problems.

Seriously, I can play Quake IV smoothly @ 1600x1200 & high detail, but can only get 10fps in this benchmark???

Seems to me they are only catering to magazines and people that only care about the newest product cycle.

The thing about the the actual program is its sloppy GFX code. Well, not so much sloppy, but not very well thought out. A sort of 'beta' of a graphics technology.

The best example of the 'beta' code is 03 proxicon and fear. Fear is two years older, but the simple fact remains that fear has higher quality textures and more going on and can easily stay above 60fps(high, AF8x) on my 9800 pro, so why they heck does proxicon run at 15-20 and have muddy textures?

I say its intentionally sloppy. Mostly to get the "omg my card runs like crap and I have to buy a new one to play the new games." When the new games will most likly run 5-10 times better.
