Team-based multiplayer strategy game idea
Now I know strategy games these days allow teams, but my idea is quite different to the current way teams are implemented
Imagine a strategy game where each of the major aspects of a campaign, air, infantry, ground vehicles and naval, are all controlled by a different player. Think along the lines of Team Fortress, where each player's job contributes as a whole, but in a strategy game. The team's success would depend on the players being able to work together as a whole, infantry deployment preceded by naval bombardment or air strikes to loosen up the opposition, just as it is in real life situations, and of course the infantry have to get to where they need to, whether by air transport, boat or APC-style vehicles. It'd probably be a really complex game to get used to at first, as alot of people would be used to simply going their own way, but in the long-run such a game could really dispel the myths that games are "antisocial" as this idea would build up teamwork skills, and communication skills aswell. And just like in team sports, victory is better when shared with others, so it could be a real boost for confidence in some of the less socially apt people but enough about the effect such a game "may" have and to the more practical questions you're probably asking: Am I making this game? No Am I capbable of making such a game? No Then why the hell would you post this? To strike up a discusssion into one of the possible ways games may go in the future, and in the hope that some game developer may come across this thread and be inspired by my idea. Btw I have absolutely no clue as to whether this idea is original or not, i just thought it up over the last 10 miunutes or so

a game like that really puts the emphasis on team work. not only that, it also needs its infantry team is pinned down, needs evac or an airstrike, they call it in, the player in charge of the air units has to respond.

Your idea = BF2 RTS!
It's a good idea. I like it. You can sorta do that kind of thing in games like Warcraft 3, but not to the extent you described. Now why hasn't a game like this been made? Probably because it requires too much teamwork if it were made as is. Unlike an FPS where players can just drop in, and assume any role without too much penalty in balance.. an RTS of this type would require a lot of prep work before actually playing. Example, if naval combat is really popular and infantry combat is not, there will be problems with finding appropriate players for games. A solution to the problem described above is to make this division of combat optional. Make a solid RTS covering each of 3 or 4 major components (Land, Sea, Air and possibly Commander) and make it possible to play the roles 3 - 4 people or by one man. That way the game isn't confined to just one play style.

Evac is kind of a pointless option in a game like BF2, which I wish was not true.
I would enjoy playing the entire game just using blackhawk to evac units that are in deep shit, but as it stands in most games now that have vechiles you don't really have to worrie about dieing (not that big a deal, 5-15 second repsawn) and its not worth waisting a vechile that flys to save some one, or even a squad. |

well maybe if a squad is pinned down, alive but holding their position a blackhawk could come in guns blazeing and get them out of a tight situation,or a helicopter to take out a tank if they're pinnned down by a tank/apc which happens to me quite often, laying in the grass waiting for a vechial to capture a point and drive away so i can recapture it

Thing is that RTS games back to warcraftII good teams already do what your describing. What your talking about almost forces the style of play. Which I assume would turn off gamers.
Just like I think an a RTS/FPS/MMO hybrid where teams fight for control over an entire planet would be really cool if it worked, but it wouldn't. |
