Star Wars: Empire at War
Well, anyone have it yet? The demo was a ton of fun for me, I might pick the game up tonight, if I can come up with the loot.
First impressions anyone? |

I like it. It was actually pretty difficult at first, and I was playing on Medium. I'm mostly talking about space battles and galactic retaliation (after you capture an Imperial planet, for example). I dunno, maybe just the Rebel campaign is hard?

I've started off with the Emperial campaign on medium, at first it is very easy the rebels barely attack you but then once you reach tech level 2 they constantly invade your planets or attack the fleets. It can be frustrating and boring having to defend the same battleground repeatedly. Ground battles are tedius cause it is always the same attacks and units whereas space battles you can use different tactics each time.
All in all it is a decent game but it will not have much replay value unless the patches introduce something new. It would be a lot cooler game if you didnt have stupid 20 unit cap for space battles that doesnt leave much room for mixing and matching space ships.

It's not a bad game
but of course it's not the best from the kind either Graphics are a little outdated (they are not ugly but are somehow poor in detail) and it has some ugly bugs both in Multiplayer and Singleplayer (not tested patch 1.2 yet) It's not Rome Total War from the gameplay\RTS view either of but it's Ok for a "Command and Conquer\Homeworld style of game" i guess The Hardcore RTS fans maybe will not like it as much as the Star wars fans Quote:
They are more about making ambushes and tactical strikes than big battles etc Try the Imperials if you love easy big fights etc |

Well, looks like I'll be holding off on it. Read a few reviews and from what everyone says here is the game doesn't seem like it would be worth the $50.00 to me. Maybe when it goes down in price. I should just put the money toward Oblivion.

If you are playing rebels, once you learn how to effectivly use your ships you own the empire so bad. (Victory class star destroyers, and the other star destroyers, are easy to take out if you blow their hanger first.) Same with space stations, take out hangers, then missles, then torpidos, then the rest of the station.
On the ground, make sure you have some of the special ops guys (i forget their name, 2 per unit sniper guys with explosives) and keep han and chubaka with attacking forces (chubaka can steal enemy vechiles, really good vs atat!) |

I like the mixed gameplay of the Galactic Conquest mode where you "skirmish" against the computer taking planets and building bases. The initial feeling you get is that there's a lot to try and for a while the Star Wars charm certainly keeps you interested.
Surprisingly to me I have found the ground battle to be the weakest part. In a game where designer house resources must have been kept tightly, I would have expected a generic but well working ground battle engine and perhaps potholes in other parts of the game. Battles tend to be small, often really small. It just feels wrong that when you have a huge spacefleet surrounding a planet, all you can send down to the surface in one go is often just two-three units. Sending down Darth Vader or some other "hero" unit to take a second drop point with more "unit slots" for more troops seems like fun at first, but when almost every planet battle start like that it just doesn't feel like Star Wars, or any RTS game of this century. But larger space battles are more fun and together with the planetary management you get a game that can be played for a while. I also haven't tried the campaign mode yet and although I don't expect much of it there should at least be some added Star Wars style entertainment in there. I'm generally more for the type of gamplay presented in the Galactic Conquest mode. |

I beat the Imperial Campaign on medium and it got SOOOO easy at the end, half of the universe was turned into rubble with the Death Star there was no challenge.
What really sucked is not once did I ever encounter a single hero on the rebellion side nor get to use Mara Jade, Boba Fett in ground battles wtf is the point of bounty hunters where there arent any heros to hunt.

Happy they fixed Han Solo (in space) in 1.2 patch... I could destroy entire fleets of victory class cruisers + space stations with that guy...

I bought the game on Saturday morning and still haven't got very far into the rebel campaign. I like that it forces you to look at the trade routes and such to keep an eye on where you need to keep your forces stationed to protect your area of influence.
Its definitely not Rome TW. Its a real time game and not a turn based game. THe only thing that was truly real time on RTW was the actual battles. I'm not a Star Wars fanboi, but the game itself seems to take the tech of the movie and translate it nicely into a nicely playable game. I don't regret buying it. Not one bit.

Its been a while since i have played any RTS, maybe since Total War, i have thoroughly enjoyed the single player campaign, but as some have said, the ground battles seem a little lacking.
Sometimes i can run around with a group of infantry and take a whole planet, there are some AI issues for sure, though space battles are a challenge at times, however is it me, or can you not rotate the camera? Space battles feel a little cluttered sometimes, and i tell one group to go over here or there and it takes a few clicks to get them moving. Overall though, it is what Galaxies should have been. Nice game overall. |
