Learning Through Play

________ The public education system in the United States is failing. To what extent and why is up for debate, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who feels our education system has kept up with the rest of the world technologically. We moved into the Internet Age in the '90s, making computers and electronic entertainment as much a part of our culture as hot dogs and apple pie. Yet if you walk into a typical urban school, you'd be amazed by how many classes are being taught through the old school "chalk and talk" method. Passing notes has been abandoned in favor of text messaging. A quick Internet search has made libraries all but obsolete. Many lawmakers suggest that more rigorous testing and stricter hiring guidelines for teachers are the solution to slumping test scores. But a growing number of experts are beginning to say that videogames may be the answer - in more ways than you might think. |
