New Smash Brothers Brawl Trailer

Source: Gametrailers
_______________
A new trailer is available for Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Wii. It shows a number of interesting things, including the first true in-game footage of the new characters and the first combat at all by snake. It also shows the first footage whatsoever of the classic Fox McCloud character. This may be an indication they will periodically releasing new videos showing new levels and new characters as well as gameplay videos.

This video showed a heavy emphasis on airborne combat, attacking while jumping. Crawling on the ground appears to be a new ability that was not seen before. Snake seems the best at it, but Wario, Kirby, and Pikachu were seen doing it as well. This may allow you to access areas of the level that only have narrow openings seperating them, also leading to choke-points for combat. Zero Suit Samus was able to crawl in Zero Mission to access new areas, and Samus has always had her morph ball to do that, so expanding on this principle in the game would add another interesting new dynamic.

Characters seem much more animated in this version of the game. Even when just standing there, many characters seem to still move a lot. Mario for instance has his fist up and is bouncing around like a boxer. Wario scratches his but and basically goofs off. At least for Mario this does not appear to be the "bored" look many game characters get when you don't move them for a while, he seems to keep this pose and movement all the time. Wario's but-scratching may be a bored look, however. Similarly Link shifts his sword, shielf and posture when standing still, . Characters are also seen looking around nervously, what significance this might hold is unclear.

There are a number of new levels shown, including:
  • a Yoshi's Island level with its classic hand-drawn look (implying a playable Yoshi). This level appears to either go through seasonal changes (not real-time, over the course of the level). I suspect they are seasonal. The colors and plant life in the background change. It is green at one point with flower buds. At another point it is slighty brown with full flowers, then the flowers disappear before your eyes and the level turns brown and stalks of grass or grain appear in their place. It seems the entire level is animated. It is not clear what, if any, impact this will have on combat in the level.
  • A snow level is seen very briefly, although I suspect this is another season in the Yoshi's island level.
  • a Mario Kart level where you have to dodge incoming shy-guys on carts. The level is in two parts, a road coming into the screen where you must avoid carts and a classic mario kart "jump" part of the road going parallel to the screen. Carts were only seen on the lower level, but I suspect that at other stages of the level carts very well may go over the jump and have to be avoided there as well. Carts may have weapons that you have to avoid as well, although this was not actually seen.
  • a Star Fox level on a moving platform in orbit around a planet that appears to turns during the level, in effects completely changing the level layout as it is viewed from different angles, and requires players to dodge incoming laser fire. The Great Fox and Airwings were also seen and may be the source of laser fire.
  • The original Angel Land (most likely) level appears to go through at least on day/night cycle, although the significance besides reducing visibility is not clear. The speed at which the moon was moving in one scene indicates it may go through several such cycles depending on how long the match lasts. This may not be a true angel land episode, but I will call it that until proven otherwise.
  • Another Angel Land (Kid Icarus) level featuring destroyable platforms and a huge temple complex in the background. It is possible that this is actually the same as the original Angel Land episode, and that the level is progressively demolished over the course of a match
  • A massive pokemon stadium level with 3D-rendered bleachers
  • There are more details about the interior castle level (or sub-level). The platforms are supported by giant statues. It is looking less and less like a Zelda level, although it may relate to things from Twilight Princess that we have not seen yet.
  • The exterior castle level was also seen. There are multiple platforms, as well as what looks like platforms in the background that you may have to move to as the level progresses. Flaming arrows and catapult shot was also seen, apparently you will have to avoid this as well. This may very well be the Hyrule Castle level (or perhaps one of several). It certainly matches the Zelda style from Twilight Princess. I will assume it is until it is shown to be otherwise.
  • Solid Snake's level, probably Shadow Moses, was also seen briefly. An exterior complex with snow and spotlights was seen as well as a metal interior corridor. Combat was only seen in the interior part, the outside may not actually be playable although based on the level of detail I suspect it is. The colors of the level match Snakes suit colors perfectly, meaning he might be difficult to see in his own level. This would match well with the stealth tactics he apparently will use. Combined with the similarity in architecture between the interior and exterior castle levels, it appears some level might have both interior and exterior components (although these might just be multiple levels with similar themes).
  • A shot of Samus in the clouds was also seen. This is probably not its own level but instead a shot from an existing level, perhaps the Angel Land or Star Fox level.

As for new character details:
  • Zero Suit Samus seems to be highly acrobatic and to be the most martial-arts oriented character. She has classic female fighting-game moves like spinning in a circle and attacking with her legs while doing a hand stand. There may be at least 3 modes to Samus's weapon. So far we have seen the gun (although she never actually shot it) and the whip. However, in the video she was seen converting it back and forth between two different modes, neither of which was the gun mode. That indicates there may be an additional mode we have not seen yet.
  • Meta-Knight appears to have some sort of glide move, perhaps as an attack, that may allow him to get back onto a platform after being knocked a long distance.
  • Solid snake was seen using a rocket launcher. This was the one of the few projectile attack in the video for some reason. The video seemed to focus on short-range combat primarily. The rocket was aimed at the ground and exploded within inches of Snake without seeming to damage him, it is not clear whether it would work at a range although I assume it would. It is also not clear whether it is manually or automatically aimed, since it appeared to be aimed directly at Pit who was laying on the ground if front of Snake. He is also very martial-arts oriented and acrobatic.
  • Classic Link, Mario, and Pikachu attacks were also seen. I did not notice anything new about these characters.
  • Fox was not seen doing anything but ordinary fighting, although he did do a taunt (which apparently have returned in this game, as several other characters did apparent taunts) and he did have his classic gun and what looked like a supply of proximity mines dangling from his belt. It is not clear whether he can actually use the proximity mines in-game.
