3D Realms' Miller Calls For Steam Spinoff
Read More/Source: Gamesutra
_______________ As part of an exclusive feature interview with Gamasutra 3D Realms' Scott Miller has called for Valve's Steam digital distribution service to spin off as a separate company, suggesting: "I would rather there emerge a leader in the market that isn’t associated with a game company." In the interview, Miller also discusses the Triton download service which 3D Realms initially aligned itself with for the release of Prey, and which closed down, explaining: "From the ashes of Triton, there’s a company starting up that will do things much better. Triton had some internal problems that hurt them from the beginning. They were a dead man walking situation from the start." |

Why don't they stfu already and finish the Duke game?
I do agree with him though.

You are right, he can STFU. If he doesn't like the fact that Vavle owns Steam he can makes his own. It sounds more like he is jealous that Steam is making money and he isn't. No company is forced to use Steam to distribute games. Look at EA, they made there own. And I also think that 3D Realms needs to concentrate on making games, not distributing them. They seem to have a problem with the first part of the whole gaming industry.

From the grape vine, apparently Duke Nukem Forever is almost 50% complete, running on the unreal 3 engine, and actually sporting some interesting gimmicks, expected launch date is somewhere mid 2007 or shortly after UT2007's launch

![]() ![]() So, the game is 50% done, and they expect to finish the game in 7 months where it took them 10+ years to get to this point. Uh.. yeah. Very optimistic indeed. BTW, Scott Miller seems to have forgotten what just happened to them with the mess that is Triton where that online distribution system shut their doors one day, and 3DRelalms was left picking up the pieces financially. Infact, 3DRealms is still reeling from that mess as this is just one more thing to add to their already tarnished reputation (as if it could get any worse). If anything, this alone is proof enough that Steam should stay right where it is: under Valves control, both financially, and structurally. If you split Steam from Valve you could potentially create an entity that could put them (3DRealms) right back into the same hole they just dug themselves out of if it can't financially survive on it's own, or at the very least Steam could end up back as part of Valve anyways. So why bother splitting it up? Why take the risk? Complain all you want, Scott. Steam is staying right where it is (I hope).
