Next time your parent or significant other bugs you to step away from the computer or console, tell them you're just improving your eyesight. A recent study by the University of Rochester - published this week in the journal Psychological Science - shows that games with high levels of action can be beneficial to the visual cortex, the part of your brain responsible for sight.

It makes sense... but I imagine you could get the same benefit from playing sports where hand-eye coordination is a key part of the game.

I dunno - as I get older, even playing tons of UT2004 and Quake 3 Arena can't seem to make my eyes any better.

Still, all I really need to do is see well enough to identify a target and see a spray of fake cartoon blood after nailing them with the Flak Cannon, and I'm good to go.

While i think sports will improve, i don't think they will be as intensive as most action intensive games are. You just aren't doing alot, all the time, on the field in sports as you are in the games.

If video games could make my blind eye suddenly grow a new lens, I'd be in good shape.

I wonder if video games have made me a better shot with a real gun...if only I had an MP5 or a Dragonov sniper and a jungle to test my theory.
