FBI raid brings down illegal Lineage II service
Source: JoyStiq
_________ The FBI's cyber squad has unsealed details of a California man's bid to host an illegal emulation of NCsoft's Lineage II MMORPG. The scheme was simple enough: obtain a copy of the game's stolen source code, rent some servers to host the game, undercut NCsoft's subscription fee -- and watch the money pile up. Blinded by greed, hoisted up by his arrogance, the man would let NCsoft hate (all the way from South Korea). |

Actually more then that..
There are other lineage2 related issues, this one took a fairly significant one.. But it's not about the severs, it's about actually CHARGING to use the servers, private servers are generally completely free, and using emulation while not using the source code and other self created programming, you can LEGALLY host a lineage2 server. But the laws and rules can be minipulated in any way. Outright selling lineage2 server use feeds is obviously crossing the line beyond reason. If ncsoft would step up and get rid of l2walker in every form it's in, and then wipe the server of the adena hords..... things would be great agin.

Umm...If a private server host is asking money, then damn right he should be buried alive. But i havent heard of any servers like that. All private servers rely on donations and there are a lot of donators out there.

Donations are one thing, asking for money to even play at all is another, they were taken out because they were requiring fees to even play, so completely ilegal there, and they were using emulation of stolen source code, without programing there own emulation, totally ilegal.
While more private servers are actually using a legal form of emulation, that doesn't actually use any source code (although my have been derived from it initially)... so far ncsoft can't touch them because it looks completely made from scratch.
