I am not a fan of Steam. I wish that they would not release Steam-ONLY versions, but just offer it as an option in addition to being able to buy the apps and run them independently of Steam or any other online component.

Edit: - can't find TG.NET (comes up to some network solutions thing) but GamersGate looks ok.

Still, I'd rather just buy it in the store so I have the physical CD or DVD and be able to install it and play it locally without having to connect to the IntarWeb. I'm a throwback.

First of all, Steam, Gamersgate and TG do not require you to connect whenever you want to play, only when you first install the game.

Second, TG's url is http://totalgaming.stardock.com/

I use all three of the above.

So if you buy Half Life 2, you HAVE to create a STEAM account, right?

Yes, but you don't have to go online whenever you want to play the game.

Wait, no, not a STEAM account, they don't have to keep your account details or anything. But you have to have steam installed.
With gamersgate you don't even need that. Just their downloader.
Still, I think you are worried too much for nothing. I used to hate steam till i used it.

I don't even play multiplayer online - I just do skirmish or deathmatch against the AI. Too many cheaters.

I don't play any steam games online, but I hate cheaters. May they never playing online again.
