DirectX10 Coming for everyone, with the help of the 'Alky Project'
Source: techPowerUp!
__________ We all know that DirectX10, for many of us, means an expensive upgrade and the move to a new operating system. We also know that DirectX10 is going to be necessary to play DX10 games such as Crysis and Halo 2 for the PC. What if I told you that a project sought to change that? That you could run DirectX10-exclusive games such as Halo 2 for PC on a DirectX9 platform with Windows 2000? Thanks to the Alky Project, we may not have to spend a penny to enjoy DirectX10 goodness. A quote from their official blog (I know, it's not an official web-page, but they do link to working models) tells us exactly how we can make DirectX10 work without spending at least $270 on a DirectX10 upgrade ($170 NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT, $100 Windows Vista Home Basic). |

It's a wrapper. Meaning it'll work, but very slowly.

It's done by emulation, as said, the CPU will do all the work, meaning it will be ultra slow. This isn't the ticket out of buying a DX10 graphics card if you still want to play games. He didn't name it compatibility libraries for fun.

so kinda like how dx9 worked when there were only dx8.1 cards available.

This sounds good. Personally, I like Vista better than XP. I know for certain that the driver issues will be resolved at some point so I will just stay with Vista...

Developers will make DX10 games Vista only so they won't even install on 2000 or Xp, anything to force people to upgrade.

I think your right.. but still time will tell and the following of the "People" will tell...
if Vista doesn't take the xp out of the picture than someone will figure out its better to stay with the older systems.. cause that what makes the cash flow..

when people call in and i ask them what OS they're using, some of them still use win98se!
that OS is basically 10yrs. oldi will upgrade to vista, but not until there is more/better driver support for all products, and also when there are a few good to awesome game titles out that would be vista exclusive .

RE: DirectX 10 on XP and why it won't work natively on XP, there was this article in the April PC Format magazine. Most of you guys already know the reasons, but maybe a few others would like to see some explanation that doesn't use some high falootin' terms to explain it.
![]() ![]() Based on this, anything that will make/help DX10 to work under XP will create a pretty hefty performance hit. I don't think it's worth it myself.

how much of a performance hit would it be though? 10% more CPU usage? and what kind of system specs would be required as the bare minimum to run dx10 from winXP?
