Since Red Storm Entertainment's 1998 release of its second game, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, video games based on the writings and situations created by Tom Clancy have gained more and more autonomy with respect to Clancy's written work--even the original Rainbow Six game was completed before its literary counterpart. Under the management of Ubisoft, which acquired Red Storm in 2000, the three main Clancy video game brands--Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell have essentially split off entirely from Clancy's own personal responsibility and have arguably become just as established in the video game world as Clancy's novels have in the world of prose.
