Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today issued details on the PlayStation 3's next firmware update, which will be available for download beginning tomorrow, May 24.
With the version 1.80 update, the PS3 will be able to upscale DVDs as well as PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games as high as 1080p, providing greater detail and picture quality on high definition displays. Due to legal restrictions, DVD upscaling will only be supported with the use of an HDMI connection. Shacknews has contacted Sony to see if similar restrictions apply to the upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, though it is assumed the system will output the enhanced picture of backwards compatible games through either a component or HDMI connection.
Also added in version 1.80 is the capability for the PS3 to stream media from any DLNA3-compatible devices connected to a local network, along with option for the system to print photos through select Epson printers.
Lastly, version 1.80 updates the PS3's support of the PSP's Remote Play functionality to work across the internet, allowing PSP and PS3 users access to certain functions of the PS3 from any internet hotspot. The full scope of the access is currently unknown, and this functionality will require the PSP to be running the as-yet-unreleased 3.50 firmware, said to be available by the end of May.
