Sony Brags of PlayStation 3 Durability After Stress Test
Source: DailyTech
_____________ Sony Computer Entertainment America’s communication’s chief Dave Karraker was proud to note on the official PlayStation blog an independent PlayStation 3 “stress test” that put the console through triple-digit hours of operation in various adverse conditions that no gamer would endure. The test, as conducted by PS3 Vault, is titled, “How to kill a Ps3 Console” and sends the machine into zero degree temperatures and sauna-level heat for over four days at a time. The first test environment was the typical family room – the place nearly all gamers will be using their PlayStation 3 consoles – where the machine ran for a continuous 108 hours with a mix of Blu-ray Disc movie playback and videogaming. The only recorded anomaly was a “slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds.” |

It's a PS3 vault. So, clearly it's Sony biased.
I can NOT believe that a piece of electronical equipment that's not custom made to be used in hot places like sauna, can work without any problems there. It's just too damn hot and there's no air circulation in there. Freezer van, I can believe. The cooler, the better, but no, it can NOT work in sauna. BTW: • Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms <-- Like they had anything else to choose from

I can believe it worked but who's to say the lifespan of that particular ps3 wasn't lowered by 75% due to the abuse it took.

True but I think they fixed the problem. As far as we know they said they did and since my 360 is in the shop again for the second time I really hope they did fix it!
The one and only good thing they did with the PS3 was make sure it can last at least a year so they no longer have to cover it. I know it has not been a year but I would think most will make it to the year life span of the warranty. |

well if my ps2 is any comment on the longevity of my ps3 i dont think i have anything to worry about for quit a few years.
you have fun with your 360 while it is down? a lot of sony products are built shabbily imo, but their gaming machines are generally top quality. your last statement is obviously born of fanboyism & has no basis in any fact whatsoever. cant say the same for 360.

Oh yes, because the PS2 never had any problems. No, top build quality

tell me were i said it never had problems? or implied it. but compared to 360 & xbox, its quality is much better. i have had mine for 4 yrs- no probs, both of my best freinds have had theirs for longer, no probs, my grandson has had his since 6 months after initial release, no probs... he has also has xbox wich he got on release & has been through rma 2x, & the 360 he got xmas has benn rma'd 2x & might be heading for 3rd.
no while i realise this an extremely small amount t og oby, it is my personal exp. & given the amount of ps2 vs xbox & what i have seen in forums over the years i think im right. of course it is jmo. so yes i think sony builds high quality gaming consoles. id be willing to bet that starting from release date of ps3(that is givinng 360 all those months of staggering amount of problems a pass) that over the next 5 years 360 will have more problems than ps3. in fact i think problems reported for ps3 wil be well within industry expected/accepted % of total units sold.

are you having some sort of breakdown? were does it 'say' or 'imply' that ps2 didnt have problems? a statement like that would be ridiculous for ANY peice of complicated electronics. instead of making silly comments on what you think was said, what dont you comment on what was actually said... ty.

This is about the only good thing you can say about that PS3.

So by saying that you don't have to worry about the ps3 quality for quite a few years based on your experience of a PS2 it doesn't mean or imply that your PS2 had no problems worth mentioning?
Are you drunk or something?

as far as basing my probable ps3 durability experience based on my & other peeps experiences with ps2 & my personal experience(& the only average reporting of ps3 problems) with what appears to be a really well built peice of equipment, yeh i think my ps3 is good for years to come. cant say that about 360. not sure what your problem is, you got ps3 envy? you shouldnt, while 360 has a host of problems it is a good platform & beats ps3 hands down for amount of games.

built in quality bd player? more gaming potential(yeh i know
)? if somebody is interested in just gaming & cant find at least 3 games they really like to play on ps3, then they should either wait til around xmas or buy a 360 when the die shrink is widely available - the shrink combined with other fixes should aleviate most of 360 problems.

I don't have a ps3 envy. In fact I wouldn't have a problem getting one.
But what appears to be your problem is that you cannot accept you were wrong on something. If I am dense you are simply stupid. I am not an xbox 360 fanboy, or of any other console. I have owned systems from almost all major manufacturers. Man, you are just annoying.

what was i wrong about? do you know? i sure dont.
the ps2 had good average reliability. my experience with it & that of my freinds & grandson was no problems at all(this does not suggest there were no problems with other units). were am i wrong? my grandson had several problems with his xbox. he had even more problems with his 360. were am i wrong? many, many people have had lots of problems with 360. were am i wrong? reported problems with ps3 are well within acceptable industry standards. were am i wrong? going by my & others experience with the ps2, the low rate of problems(so far) with ps3, the apparent build quality of my unit(& build quality of ps3 is something most reviewers have commented on), my opinion is that my ps3 will give me years of trouble free operation. were am i wrong?

Besides developing an annoying clicking sound the ps2 works after all these years (was a 2000 launch console) and i've discovered that some component needs tightening which i can't be bothered to do and pointless now. The 360 is a good console when it works but i'm kind of tried having to go to argos to exchange it because it keeps breaking down. Never had a console break down on me though i've only owened the mega drive ps1 and ps2 prior to the 360 and the ps3.

my original ps2 lasted a little over 3 years, then it had the blue disk read problems.
i sold that one then bought a new one. 4 years later, and thousands of hours of use, not a single problem with it. i dont doubt the ps3 will be this trouble free either when i get one.

Nope no problems so far, guess i could optimise the cooling so the fan doesn't kick into 3rd gear when watching a blu ray but it's more than acceptable. I'm really pleased with it, japanese technology and engineering is truely a wonder.

thx guys. my whole point to blu mak was that expecting durability from ps3 becuase of the overall good record & personal experience with ps2 & 3 wasnt unreasonable. since he hasnt responded to my above questions i assume he finally agrees with me.
hopefully with the die shrink & other fixes 360 will finally be able t obecome a reliable gaming platform. having 2(or more-sorry nintendo ) great, reliable gaming platforms is in all our best interests.

mike2h, the only reason I don't reply is to not completely ruin this thread and have it locked.

You could try putting it vertical. The problem I have is the surface is black absorbing energy. The vents are at the side and there's not much clearence to the ground. Having it vertical supposedly helps, more room for the heat to dissipate.

while that is a good idea & probably the optimum placement solution, it is not feasible in my situation. & withe space that is around it their is plenty of air flow. im going t oorder a fan designed for these kinda situations, it does somewher in the 50's cfm & is in the uper 20's db for noise- wich beats the ps3 fan all to hell- as long as it isnt running at the same time. lol.
