GH Review: Ship Simulator 2008
Read The Review Here
_______________________ Gaming Heaven has recently ventured into a content sharing scheme with our good friends over at yougamers As recent releases have attested to, the modern PC is still king when it comes to simulations. Titles such as Microsoft's Flight Simulator X (flying) and SimBin's GTR 2 (auto racing) accurately capture the richness of real-world experiences on a computer monitor. From military strategy to sports, there's a PC simulation available for most passions. One notable void, however, is maritime simulation. Boating and sailing enthusiasts have been forced to choose from a small number of less-than-stellar titles. Looking to fill that void is Dutch developer VSTEP, with their Ship Simulator 2008 (published by Lighthouse Interactive), the follow-up to their introductory maritime depiction Ship Simulator 2006. |

Hooooo ya, now this is what im talking about. Please let their be a demo floating around.
So I gotta ask, is it really difficult tugging in choppy waves? ![]() Actually now i've read the review im not so impressed, I was hoping for some splice the main brace, shiver me timbers, pirates of the caribbean type action not barren ships devoid of humans to nudge off board and then run over. Not a plank in site. Graphically it looks like swathes of nasty coloured flat panels, puts me very much in mind of....well just as an example the side of a ship. Review music was a little upbeat for a leisurely cruise simulator, be nice to drop the beat or whatever the young'uns call it and play a little of the in-game sounds. Speedboat looked fun, though I doubt there'll be much simulation carried out in it, I envisage chuckling gamers aiming it at anything that resembles a ramp and trying to throw it over the top of trees or buildings. My dreams of sailing into my local harbour proudly tooting my horn (whilst trying to avoid the coastguard and indecency charges) and docking before dis-embarking the latest gaggle of Eastern European immigrants will have to wait until 2010. Shame, so much potential so poorly realised. Even Steven Seagal would have let this one sink. |

Oh dear, this, is bad, SHIP simulation? what next.... When "Truckers Luck: Lorry Driving Simulator" is made, I'm going to quit gaming.

Its more than just puttering through the scenario's for me, I like ringing up engineering and doing the nav part too, shooting posits and using the sat nav stuff, you know...comparing the draft in salt or fresh water, dealing minimum steerage for depth, etc. All that stuff is what I like. worphing into the dock, deceleration formulas in your head, calculating fuel and tides, just kicking up a rooster tail of water behind you..now that is a hoot!!!
and no Z, your not that off liking stuff like this...I loved Subhunter and IL2 as well..

![]() but then, when you break down the basic idea of something like Sim City it sounds like it should be terribly dull, when in fact it's so damn addictive I've misplaced entire weeks cos of it ![]() still don't fancy the ship thing though. |
