Sony drops backwards-compatibility forever

Source: CVG
__________
In a new eye-opener from Sony the company's revealed that it's to drop backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products.

"...we believe this [backwards compatibility] less important now than when we launched... Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences", Sony's said in a statement on its plan to phase out the 60GB PS3 in the UK and leave the new cut-down 40GB model as the only one available at retail.

Sony's 40GB PS3 marks the beginning of the end for backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products then. The console won't play PS2 games, although according to Sony 'The backwards compatibility of PSone titles is achieved through software and the vast majority of PSone titles are backwards compatible with the new PS3".

Wow. Even I will admit this is a bad move on their part. I always thought that backwards compatibility was a Playstation strong suit seeing as there are literally over 10,000 Playstation 1\2 titles.

interspaced is on a distinguished road

think the 60 gigs will still be able to support it just don't expect any further improvements. PS1 games should still work on the new 40gigs since that's software emulation.
The 40 gig PS3 will have the PS2 graphics synthezier taken out to reduce cost hence the reason for no PS2 compatablity. Before it was the emotion engine that was taken out of EU PS3s.
