Sony Confirms 40GB PS3 for U.S.

This was a widely anticipated announcement, particularly since the 40GB model has already launched in Europe and Japan. Just as in those models, this model won't have backward compatibility with PS2 games.

retarded they got rid of the backwards comptability, and so soon. i mean the competitors have it, how much is it costing them to keep the emotion engine? on top of that, not even software emulation.

happy i got my 60gb while i still could, hopefully i never have to replace it

OMG Sony they just DO NOT GET IT!!

I just don't understand this company AT ALL! First they want everyone to have blu-ray and thats fine but by doing that they priced them self out of the market and it's shows by the very small amount of systems sold.

Second they lower the price of the PS3 but just for a short while and maybe they noticed they sold quite fast? Did that give them a hint? Well kind of

Up today they are now going to release a cheaper PS3 but now it can't do half as much as the PS3 60 or 80gig model or even the lower 20gig model.

Sony tries to cut costs at so many different places it's not even funny. They just have to step up to the plate and say we are sorry for making a system this time around thats just a hair to expensive for the mass market to buy. Maybe on the PS4 they will understand that releasing a system for $500 to $600 is just to much for a typical console gamer.

Look at the Wii $250 and it out beat even the 360 that has been out longer. They understand even MS understands and did not include a HD-DVD drive in the 360 and kept the price low!

you think sony would have had their marketing strategy figured out a while before ps3 release. flexibility is needed in any endeavour, but this is getting a little silly.
i do wish peeps would stop comparing wii to 360 & ps3. wii is pretty awsome for its price range & what it does, but it is just not on the same level as the other 2. nor is it intended to be.

Sony and this goes for any company can not please everyone. If you don't like it, don't buy it. The 40GB PS3 is geared toward people that don't want to play the older games. And it's not like backwards compatibility can't be added later anyway.

i think this backwards compatibility thing is way overblown - sony/ps3 haters use it for whatever. if you have any ps2 ganes & are still playing them, you have a ps2. a ps3 does not play ps2 games any better. period.

Gives those who are interested in blu ray a cheap way to entry point. At least they won't have to worry too much about their blu ray's not playing.

This may help Sony a bit, but until they can get the PS3 under $300 it's gonna fall even further behind the Wii.
