A chronic shortage of Nintendo's popular Wii console could mean disappointment for those putting it at the top of their Christmas list. The BBC has learned that high street retailers are struggling to keep up with demand for the console, which has been in short supply for months.

Why can't Nintendo figure out whats taking so long to build these units?

It's going on 1 year and they are still having problems with people trying to find them? Really can it be that big that over 1 year and people are buying them up as fast as possible? This is even old gen stuff like a gamecube remastered it can't really be that hard to make.

i won one in a competition recently and cant decide if i want to be mercenary about it or not , i want a PS3 to play with and looking at amazon i could probably get about 350 to 400 for the Wii right now

thing is i figure i could probably get upwards of 500 closer to christmas ... what to do what to do ....

I'd either hold onto the wii or use the money for a 360. Trading either of them to afford a ps3 is probably the only wrong thing you can do in the current generation.

At least wait until there are ps3 exclusives out that you want, and more that you're sure you're interested in. As it currently stands, most games with next-gen graphics are coming out on both the 360 and the ps3 or moving to just the 360. Microsoft is currently offering additional gameplay on every title that appears on both the 360 and ps3. These are called achievements. They're like a set of optional objectives you can take on inside the game and they usually add to replayability. At 60 USD a title on either system, it's hard to turn down the one that gives you a reason to play longer.

The 360 is cheaper and its online strategy is already in top condition (they're currently celebrating their 5th birthday of xbox live). For the 600 bucks the ps3 hardware costs you could get the 360 console, a year of xbox live gold, a second controller, the recharging bay and rechargeable battery packs for both your controllers, and then a game with online play. You and another friend are already lined up to play with people from all over the country. If you spent that money on the ps3, then you could invite your friend over and watch The Incredible Tale of Bobby Ricky or whatever blu-ray disc comes with it now and then surf the internet together watching youtube videos.

There hasn't been a $600 PS3 for some time now. In fact the difference is only $50 and you get a game and five movies with the PS3. Xbox Pro is $350, PS3 40GB is $399. Xbox elite is $450, PS3 80 or 60GB is $499(i wont mention the HD-less 360 as that is total waste imho). Price is no longer an argument imho but the game library is most definitely worth mentioning. If game libraries were equal there is no doubt the PS3 would offer A LOT more for its asking price.
As for the Wii, I sent the $$ (damn euro, it hurt!!) to my sister in Greece to pick one for my nephew for Christmas. I won't see them 'till next summer but that doesn't mean I can't still treat them to something nice for the holidays

it's pretty unbelievable that it's so hard to get hold of one this xmas. I had a hard time last year, had to get one shipped from Germany, didn't see there being a prob this year. think the shear volume of sales caught Nintendo out a bit tbh, the figures are pretty damn impressive, especially with the continuing shortages

it all depends on location...

looking at the numbers.. it's pretty impressive..... considering how poorly the gamecube did in comparison.....

it's all great though.... means nintendo's next console should be utterly amazing.... top end graphics with a newer generation of wiimote...

Where do you base that? What makes you think that Nintendo will spend more than $100 on R&R for the next version?
I "predict" they will "develop" a new system that has 1.5-2 times the power of the Wii by smartly joining two Wiis together in a swordfight like maner. Then cover them with a thin but steardy layer of plastic and sell a few billion consoles.

I can see a better version of the CD-i controller there though.
I am still almost shocked that no other company has yet to sell a wiimote like controller for the PS2 or something. They usualy take like 6 months before $14.99 versions-clones of good remotes are released.

Maybe Nintendo patented the techs around it, that it's impossible to make a proper clone.

Anyway no shortage here in Denmark, except for the first few months, there never has been.

There's no point in making a wiimote for the ps2 since none of the games support it. At best you're just mapping motion controls to the ps2 analog stick and that is very gimmicky.

I think in the next generation Nintendo will iterate the Wii name instead of having a new name. I'm hoping they up the graphical output (1080p), have a real online solution, put a real hard drive in the console. I think I want some sort of wii360.

yes, if they had done that, id have one myself. no way im gaming on a 52inch screen with SD graphics. Although the current graphics card nintendo are using could never handle 1080. would need a complete overhaul as well as a huge ass price increase.
