Blu-ray too Small for Metal Gear Solid 4

It seems that the tech companies will never be able to keep up with the demands of a Metal Gear Solid game, with Hideo Kojima stating in a Famitsu interview that Guns of the Patriots suffered cuts in order to fit onto to a Blu-ray disc.

At 50GB, the Blu-ray offers nearly six times the storage capacity of a DVD – but it's still not enough for the demands of Metal Gear Solid 4. Earlier last week the game's assistant producer Ryan Payton confessed that the American and European versions would not carry the Japanese voice track due to storage limitations. Hideo Kojima further elaborated on the issue and stated in a Famitsu interview, kindly translated by Kotaku, that, "There's not enough space. We always talked about where to cut and what to compress."

I guess that means no MGS4 for the Xbox 360 or PC.
Why can't they release the game in 2 discs?
Oh, and at at least 50GB, they better make a game that will bring pleasure in all of your body when you play it, the game.

It isn't quite that simple on a console.. It's not like you can just compress everything on the console. Although the PS3 does have the ability to decompress onto the disk which they could use in this case. But in any case that data has to go somewhere when you decompress it, and this is not a PC where you could just shove it into memory. When you program for a console you don't have access to "virtual memory" to shove everything onto so you can't use aggressive compression methods to keep things small like you can on the PC.

I can't say much about an Xbox 360 version as the only way I could think of this working for that would be multi-disk or multi-disk/120gb HD requirement. But there is no reason this could not be ported to the PC. With the PC they could use an aggressive compression method to shrink the game on to DVD and possibly fit it on a few disks which the user would install to their Hard-drive. I mean it's not like the game won't fit on a PC hard-drive they can only store up to 1TB of space that is what 20 MGS4 games per disk?

I read this last week, it was pleasing to hear. Tells me MGS4 will be no holds barred and probably a really large game (longer this time also hopefully) and that the 360 rumors can be squashed even harder now. Kojima probably wont port this to PC after the mess up of MGS2 Substance for windows. Terrible port.

This doesn't have to be as bad as it sounds. It's entirely feasable for the disk to have enough space for 1 language's dialogue tracks but miss having enough for 2 by only a few gb. That's still insane, either they talk in 7.1 surround sound or they talk A LOT (previews suggest both -- ugh), but we don't have to assume the game will be coming out in english at 49gb. It could be 40gb and can't fit the japanese audio tracks because those weigh in at 12gb, for example.

That'd run it at 5 dvds for 360 or pc. Not unheard of for the pc, but that would probably break a 360 record. Lost Odyssey is 4 disks and one of em doesn't fit onto the disk spool in the packaging.

Who knows, though. Maybe sony paid them to use as much of the blu-ray space as possible. You can never be too cynical when you're dealing with sony and their formats.

i definitely don't care for a japanese track for this game, its an american story. Why would I want japanese, the japanese actors are great but the best voice is David Hayter (who does snake, and a graduate of my university also haha). I could definitely see 7.1 sound in this game happening, and a lot of uncompressed textures. I know the biggest problem in this game will be the controls, its very complex from what I read in many articles. I doubt this limitation will ruin the quality of the game, and I really think this is the finale for MGS and Snake, but not Metal Gear.
