Nintendo DSi Review
"Nintendo isn't known for upgrading systems without reason, and the new DSi adds considerable power to the company's handheld line. Fresh features like brighter/bigger screens, Secure Digital (SD) Memory card support and twin digital cameras prove cool introductions, just to start. But the system's real strength comes in its downloadable games shop - something that might help players forget about the unit's dropped GameBoy Advance support, and the fact it'll be a mostly optional purchase for current DS owners."

Re: Nintendo DSi Review
Con: Volume adjustment missing one level. Think about the volume levels going from 1 to 8, 4 being audible, but not loud enough, and when you get to 5 it instead skips to 6, which is too loud. It's obvious (painfully obvious if you are using headphones) that there is one level of volume missing.
Con: Battery life really really sucks. The day before I bought it I purchased the 1800mAh battery for it. Glad I did. Come to think of it, I've been using it since day one, and I've yet to charge it again. Con: Weaker sounding audio. Yes, the new speakers sound really good, but throw on a pair of headphones, and it immediately becomes obvious that the audio is actually weaker in the mid-range than in the DS Lite. This is probably due to them using a different audio chip. Con: SD memory card cover. Anyone that owns/owned a PSP knows how much of a pain in the arse the memory stick cover can be where it can come off while holding the unit, or become flimsy. Same is true for the DSi. Whenever I'm holding the right side I can feel the SD cover moving in my hands. Aggravating to say the least. The DS cart slot doesn't have a cover, so why did you need one for the SD slot? Con: WPA/WPA Wifi is not supported by DS games. Nintendo, in all their wisdom, rather than replace the original Wifi have instead supplemented it by adding 3 new slots, Advanced slots, where they've put the WPA/WPA2 support into, which thus brings up the total slots to 6. DS games, however, only see the first 3 slots, the WEP only slots. That means no WPA support for DS games. Like, WTF use is that? Pro: Volume adjustment doubles as the brightness adjustment simply by holding down the Select button at any time.. even during gaming. No more having to turn the system off then on just to adjust the brightness. Pro/Con: Matte finish makes it easier to hold the unit, however this is also a Con as it makes my hands sweat more. Pro: Nice big, bright screens. They may only be .25" bigger, but it's in fact a noticeable difference. Pro: RESET!!! Yes, just hit the power button once, and the system resets. No more having to turn off the system. Last edited by Tipstaff; Apr 11, 2009 at 01:57 PM. |

Re: Nintendo DSi Review
Con: It blocks all flashcarts that work on an old DS and can have its firmware updated to block flashcarts that ARE made for it.
Con: No GBA port means you won't be playing Guitar Hero on it, nor can you use the rumble pak. Similarly, any homebrew that required expanded memory in the GBA port is now useless on the DSi. It also effectively halves the total library of games you can play on it by eliminating all GBA games.

The GBA thing.. this is the only reason I'm keeping my DS Lite (day 1 DS Lite as a matter of fact) as I have a ton of GBA games, and I still play them (Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Advanced Wars, FF Tactics.. all the best stuff). |
