New Xbox to be powered by AMD - report

The successor to the Xbox 360 will feature a GPU designed by AMD.

That's according to a report by Fudzilla, which suggests Microsoft will continue its partnership with the tech firm, already responsible for the custom Xenos GPU for the Xbox 360.

For some reason

this after the economic crisis pushed back a planned 2010 launch.
is something I don't believe.

By saying compatibility with legacy games, they mean xbox 360 games, right?

Re: New Xbox to be powered by AMD - report

2010 isn't out ofthe question... a november release would be very likely seeing as the launch of the xbox360 was 2005. (5 years)..

and previous to that..... wasn't it also 5 years for the xbox?

Re: New Xbox to be powered by AMD - report

The development of the first generation of games for a console starts on simulators so developers can get cracking before the first prototypes are made. That said, the architecture of the console has to be "frozen" first and considering the lack of any substantial data about it, it's very likely that Microsoft hasn't reached that stage yet. That would leave about a year for MS to finalize the architecture and make and distribute SDKs and simulators to the developers, who would then need to do a full development cycle and have the discs manufactured and distributed (unless they decide to go download-only for the next generation of consoles). Not impossible, but those elves better be quick coders as it is rather short if you want AAA games for the launch.

Plus, having finished the work on the architecture, SDKs and simulators, MS, and partners, would have to actually have all of the necessary chips successfully manufactured and then to assemble and distribute the consoles in necessary quantities. It's a pretty tight schedule and unless MS has done much more than they are letting us know, it's very unlikely.
