Good. I agree, not just for consoles but for PCs too. There is plenty of power there, and not enough optimization.

The problem is that it's impossible to optimise for "the PC" because it's such a varied platform. That's why some games run faster on ATI cards while others run faster on NVIDIA. Some games gain a lot from a large cache, while others gain more from multiple cores.
With consoles, optimising makes sense, because it's a standard platform with known capabilities and limitations. On the PC, you have to include a lot of options just to allow people with different hardware specs to be able to play the game. So sure, a lot of optimisation work does go into PC development, but the amount of knowledge and amount of work that would be required to do optimisation like on a console is prohibitive. |
