Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
We've just received some exclusive news and specs on the Wii 2 via Logic-Sunrise.com) (though a Nintendo of France marketing employee). The leaked specs denote the Wii 2 will get a Blu-ray drive (mainly to stop piracy), but will also support 1080P for games as well as movies. The new system is due out during the third quarter of next year and there will be the option to trade in old Wii's!

I seriously doubt it.

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
Me too. I'm under the impression that Wii is doing very well so this could be a dangerous move.
I don't think that trying to compete with XBOX 360 and PS3 at what they are good at is a good idea. I don't think that it's a good idea to abandon a working formula in order to try to do something that competition has done years ago and which it will probably overshadow not too long after the Wii 2's alleged arrival. Also, the trade in program sounds fishy. A "Wii upgrade" which would bring high definition sounds like a good idea, except that in the case of consoles it means a completely new unit. Due to Wii's great success, in other words, because of the sheer number of units out there, I think that offering anything more than a $10 discount could have serious financial consequences.

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
While I doubt the news, I don't think it's technically impossible. Blu-ray drives are down to $60 for consumers, and will be lower next year. Graphics/CPU/RAM have all advanced quite a bit in the 3 years since the Wii was released. It should be possible to produce a much more advanced console in terms of hardware for the same cost the Wii originally had.
It also makes sense for Nintendo, because the current hardware makes it impossible to convert games from other platforms other than the PS2. |

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
Not necessarily. $50 is easily possible. It all depends on the pricing and the cost of the unit. Charge $300 for the new console and discount to $250. Or even if it's $250 and $200 after discount, it could work. There are reasons to do it and reasons not to.

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
Compatibility is a real question, but it's hard to say how difficult it would. I'm not familiar with Wii development, so can't say how much is abstracted. It shouldn't be a problem to continue to use a PowerPC CPU (which all consoles currently use) and it may be possible to abstract the graphical system like Microsoft has done with the DX9 fixed function pipeline (which is converted to shaders on new cards). Hard to say, but maybe they can do it.
As for having two consoles on the market, that's not a huge problem. The PS3 and PS2 are both on the market, and the PS2 is dying slowly (very slowly), and developers are developing games for both. So the original Wii will probably die slowly, but at least Nintendo will have something for 360/PS3 developers to target. |

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
FACT:
Nintendo has made a massive killing off the Wii... why? They used basically the same components and part that they had used in the Gamecube.... using up old stock and reducing the cost of the console considerably.... Sure there have been a "few" upgrades made to it over the orginal gamecube.. but aside from a slight redesign and a little faster overall (die to nm shrinks and lost cost memory) , the parts are basically overall the same. Factor in the overall "sold out" scheme they had been running for a number of years in many places.... you've got a big dollar winner. When it came to the gamecube, they did "so-so" didn't lose money but they didn't exactly flourish. Basically they made back when they needed to for what they lost in the N64 generation. (and yes, they did lose a little bit according to the sources i read up on).... The wii was basically for lack of a better word, a "concept" made for the consumer... basically slapping a gamecube up with some motion sensing characteristics. Shit they had Progressive Scan 480p resolution back on the orginal gamecube release, really there isn't much difference between the 2 console on a game related basis. So Nintendo makes an astounding amount of money off the games and wii itself. Funnels that into Console developement very earlier, and starts producing what I had heard was to be called the "wII" (not Wii2). The xbox360/PS3 computational powers and graphics rendering are old school now, VERY easy to produce, cheap as shit and with modern technically runs exceptionally cool. So it's not at all far fetched to think that a new wii could potentially crush the current Xbox360/PS3 in all realms, but it is highly unlikely that they'll be able to beat out there next version of those competitors consoles without making a very expensive console. Blu-Ray support, no problem, 1080p Support, (100% TRUE 1080p i mean, not the xbox360's or ps3's 640x380 upscaled BS)... Sure, Backwards Capability with previous GC/Wii games, shouldn't be that big of a problem. All for $300.... sounds about right. What i don't beleive is the "trade" in scheme.... that sounds like complete BS.... Never once has nintendo done this.. and i don't think they will.....

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
Regarding 1080p and blu-ray, one question is whether they'd also allow it to play blu-ray movies. They didn't provide DVD playback on the Wii, and IMO it can be an appealing feature. What I'd love to see is a Wii, same as now, with a pico projector, built in speakers and DVD playback. Will make a great portable gaming/multimedia system. Low def, sure, but cool.
For hardware, I don't think the new Wii needs to outdo the other consoles. Being about the same strength, with perhaps a DX10 feature set, will be enough. Even slower would work. I could definitely see games running at 720p as enough. BTW, what are you referring to with "640x380 upscaled BS"? |

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
Halo 3 for example uses a 648x380 (16:10/9) resolution.. and then after drawing it, creating that image at that resolution... slaps it up on a 1080p tv.
There is basically no games out there that are TRUELY 1080p... because the hardware just isn't capable of dilivering the frame rates at those resolutions. Not without falling back on the image quality significantly.. this goes for GoW and so forth..

You mean no console games.
I am pretty sure there are a couple but I can't help about which. I don't really care, most of the games look good as they are.

Not unless you say it. A word makes a huge difference.

Re: Wii 2 specs leaked, Blu-ray enabled and 1080p support?
well it's kinda redundant in a thread specifically talking about consoles... and knowing full well that there are no PC games that don't run 1080p or higher resolutions... at least.. i'm not aware of any.... (provided they aren't achient)
