Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
A girl has been killed after picking up a loaded gun, apparently mistaking it for a Wii Remote gun-style controller.
Three year-old Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan from Wilson County Tennessee died from a single self-inflicted shot to the abdomen from a .380 calibre semi-automatic pistol. The loaded firearm had been left on the coffee table in the living room of the girl’s house, after her stepfather thought he had heard a prowler outside. According to the child’s mother, Cheyenne had been playing a Wii game that uses a gun peripheral - not one manufactured or approved by Nintendo (seen in the picture, underneath the handgun used in the shooting) - shortly before the accident occurred. The youngster was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe is investigating the case, although has not yet brought any charges relating to this tragic incident. __________ source: Yahoo |

He thought he heard a prowler outside and....proceeded to leave his gun on the table? I mean, WTF?
At the very least, stupid parents.

Re: Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
at first I was going to say I'm speachless, but I'm really not. Too many things come to mind, especially since I have a 23 month old son. Please don't take anything I'm about to say as me thinking lightly on the parents. I can't even comprehend WTF, and all the other acronyms as to why you'd have a gun in the house with a child, let alone leave it around, leave it loaded, leave it with the safety off, etc, etc, etc.
But. I'm also one against violent video games for children, of any age. Don't get me wrong. I play the Battlefield series all the time. But those type of games are war based, not stupid criminal stuff like the GTA series (flame me all you want. I think you're a tool for playing a game where you, as the main charactor has to break the law). |

Concerning the newspost. That's just stupid parenting. Especially having a 3 year old playing a shooting game with a real-looking like gun, and then leaving a real gun loaded with safety off on the table. I mean, what is the girl gonna think.. :S

Personal point of views respected.. Having a weapon in a house specially with children of ANY age is actually something i support. It's the parents job to make it quite clear to the child that you don't bloody well screw with it. Not the confusion aside, which is the parents fault in full, weapons needs to be placed in appropriate places. Now parents view their children as angels and such which is fine, but subconciously seem to insist they are stupid too and claim "well their just children".... You tell a 2 year old or older child not to EVER go near such a thing, and they don't listen, a little displine to set them straight and they won't screw with it ever. I grew up with guns that were properly handled, and was taught to respect them, personally i don't like guns but i have absalutely no problems with people handling them, EVEN in public place with children around if they are handled properly and aren't pulled out for any stupid willy nilly reason.

Re: Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
problem is that the child couldnt tell which was the real thing. The real gun or the gun used as wii-mote.
You can tell that child all you want that it shouldn't touch the gun, but if you let them play with 'toys' that look like the real thing, it's no wonder things like this happen. If you are gonna tell them that they shouldn't play with the weapon, don't have toys that look like them either.

Is it really true? I mean, I've heard that real guns have a heavy trigger to avoid firing by mistake. A three years old does not have very strong fingers. It should have been hard for her to pull the trigger. Maybe it's just me but I don't support letting a three year old play games with a gun controller, even if it's used for games rated for kids. A gun is not a toy. Wait until they are a bit older before letting them use it. When I was a kid, maybe at around six or seven years old, I got a Nintendo and I had Duck Hunt with the gun peripheral. The NES light gun was orange and it did not look like a real gun. My parents were fine with it, I guess it was because it was used in a animal hunt game. When the SNES Super Scope came out, my parents were against it, this time probably it was targeted for war games. |

The father will probably even keep the right to have a gun.

Re: Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
This is merely a bad misdirection attempt towards the Wii console.
Not necessarily, but sure makes you wonder why the safe mechanism wasn't on, or why the gun was left behind to begin with.. Last edited by iPlayer; Mar 10, 2010 at 02:39 PM. |

Re: Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
The parents are idiots!
Trying to tie this in with some game controller is bull-cookies, If you got kids and a loaded gun in reach it's your fault, not the kid's, and not some confusion over a "look a-like" game controller....... It's the parents fault 100%

Re: Girl killed in Wii Remote mix-up
the fact they let a 3 year old play with a look-a-like gun + having a real gun in the house is reason enough to declare them unfit for having children..
solution, castration or something along those lines.
