OnLive predicts the death of consoles

Tom Dubois, executive producer at OnLive, has predicted that home consoles will eventually be replaced by cloud gaming, a service which OnLive currently provides. Dubois, who was speaking in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, also stated that the future would see games built specifically for cloud computing.

Dubois spoke about the gap in between console releases and how present consoles are only now ‘refreshing’ with the launch of the Kinect and Move additions from Microsoft and Sony. “We're gonna get another box, but after that, do we need boxes anymore? The bandwidth at homes [is] [will] gonna be there, the cost of computingcontinue to decrease...”

OnLive presently allows gamers to play console or PC games on systems that do not meet system requirements. Thus, depending on the available Internet connection, an OnLive subscriber could play Crysis on a netbook.

Re: OnLive predicts the death of consoles

Is it 1999 again? Consoles and PCs will be fine. They will not merge into a mobile phone which works as a barebones terminal and have all the files and data and calculations performed on servers. No matter how much some may want it.

Re: OnLive predicts the death of consoles

But if you think about it this would be the most logical step forward, having all the work done somewhere else and just having a terminal that you game from, we'll see if it happens though.

I have NO idea how this is the logical step forward.

Re: OnLive predicts the death of consoles

Think if servers many times more powerful than a single console or PC did all the work how much easier it would be for us, all we would need is a terminal and we're good.

Re: OnLive predicts the death of consoles

But a server wouldn't run one instance of a game at a time, plus lag issue, plus having to rely on the server to do anything, plus are you kidding me?

The only reason onlive says bs like this is because this is their job and how they want to make money.
I find it hard to believe that any gamer would accept this as a proper solution.
The only people that would find this perfect? is the people who only play online games or web based games.

He probably means the outdated console hardware, when compared to pcs, and because of this all the nifty features the high-end PC can do often isn't being taken advantage of.

^Hopefully that made sense.
