Ubisoft Cuts Off Legit Players With DRM Server Migration; Pirates Play On
When it comes to DRM, nothing is more annoying and hated than DRM that requires a constant internet connection. This DRM regularly pings a server controlled by the creator of the game in order to prove that you, the paying customer who paid money to buy the game, are not a dirty pirate. One of the loudest critiques of this type of DRM is what happens when the DRM cannot make the connection to the server. We have already seen what happens to Ubisoft games when there is an unexpected server crash. Gamers weren't too thrilled about that. Now we learn that Ubisoft is looking to give its paying customers another look into why such DRM systems are a real bad idea. Ubisoft will be taking its authentication servers down on Tuesday, February 7th for an unspecified amount of time.

Re: Ubisoft Cuts Off Legit Players With DRM Server Migration; Pirates Play On
Clearly Ubisoft aren't getting many sales from tech-aware customers anymore - those people either pirate or go elsewhere. This outcome might finally wake up the masses, however. Probably not though.

Maybe since PC gamers usually have higher tech awarness than console fans who just want to insert disc and play.

Re: Ubisoft Cuts Off Legit Players With DRM Server Migration; Pirates Play On
I mentioned this in another thread:
"What I find very interesting is that every game listed as being completely unplayable during the transition are the same ones that have (or had) the Online Services Protection DRM, the one that requires an "always on" internet connection. I find this interesting since ALL of those games (with the exception of Settlers 7) are NOT supposed to have that DRM any more, or at the very least isn't supposed to have the "always on" portion of their DRM. Ubisoft was supposed to have removed the protection, and yet here we have those exact same games not working AT ALL while their servers are down. I would very much like to see Ubisoft explain this one away." Seriously, I really would like to see someone call Ubisoft to the mat on this. |

And they'll say that they were perfectly honest when they were making the change to the DRM, because, while the headlines of the news said "Ubisoft removes always on DRM from <game_x>, reading the articles revealed that they switched the scheme from "always on" to "on every time you want to play" (the slight difference being that you can now disconnect after starting a session).
