GH Review: Unreal Tournament 3 (PC)

Read The Review Here
_________________________

After it seemed like the UT series was about to become the next Fifa (you know, a new revision every year with hardly any new features added to the mix) with the 2003 and 2004 releases, things got quiet. It took 3 years for the next installment to be finally ready and thankfully Epic decided to drop the release year naming convention and returned to a more standard, numerical naming. But is that big III behind the Unreal Tournament name and logo all that this new version delivers, or did the upgrade to the Unreal Engine 3.0 bring more?

only one thing that i kinda disagree on..

openal works perfectly in the game.... while the game has a "few bugs"... openal isn't one of them... 64bit OS running the game and it's utterly beautiful

i think it wouldn't be to bad of an idea to post system specs for the pc game reviews... may assist other people in comparing thier specs while reading the review....

just an imo...

Excellent stuff (both the review and the game). I even agree on the Enforcer being a favourite (make that Double Enforcers, actually). If the guys at EBGames didn't ask 68 something CAD for the regular version, I'd be plying this right now

OpenAL is very bugged on certain systems, like mine. It causes crashes followed by DRIVER_LEFT_LOCKED_PAGES BSOD's after 20 or so minutes of playing for me.

That would appear more of a driver issue with the audio device then a game specific bug......

as i've seen reports from other games that use openal .... that get similare results....

Some games that I have to use ALchemy for (like Oblivion) do that occasionally (but after 4-5 hours, if at all), but others work fine. Just not UT3.

Searching on google states it's completely random..... some people get a result of instant BSOD when they use openAL... it varies....

from what i can see....it's pretty specific to any audio device that uses creative chipset/drivers....

judas its clear there are problems which is why it was mentioned in the review - it has been verified on many systems. please dont derail the thread just because its working fine for you.

no intentions of derailing it... the dicussion is pretty specific on something directly mentioned in the review....

I'm not questioning the problems that have occured.... it's a known fact that there are errors in relation to openAL... but there isn't any hard specific evidence to state once and for all, with no doubt in mind, that the issue is specific to the games openAL implementation..... or the engines...

I recently fired it up under a vista OS and on a creative card, expecting to see some pretty solid results..... only to also run into the openAL issue.. disabling it resolved the issue, but i highly doubt it's just a coincidence that out of all the machines i've so far ran the demo and the full game on... that the only times it's been some weird issue with openal has been with either a creative card.... or in one specific case.. i had a board with onboard ADI sound..... no surprise.. ADI sound is horrible..... unstable anyways....

Not saying i've tested/ran the game on 50 machines.. but if i did my numbers right, since the demos release start of mid october... i've had it on over 15 machines ranging is a whole hell of alot of different hardware. (pretty amazed the game runs "reasonably well" on some of the machines i've ran it on)
