Dragon Age: Origins (PC) Review @ GH

Read The Review here
________________
For the few of you who dont know - legendary developer Bioware have a new game released called Dragon Age: Origins. Publisher Electronic Arts have been behind a huge marketing campaign with a level of hype I havent seen in quite a while. Thankfully we are glad to report, for once, our expectations are met - this is possibly THE game of 2009.

97%! Wow, definitely gonna get this one.

To the reviewer, or anyone else lucky enough to have finished it, is it possible to finish the main storyline in a weekend?

I haven't played our copy much and normally these games aren't my cup of tea but this is absolutely mega. even I like it and im more a run and gun Left4Dead kinda guy.

I spoke to John and he said, it would take maybe 60 hours to complete the main game without doing much exploring or side missions. he has had over 100 hours out of it and still wants to replay it.

Seems pretty amazing tbh - If only I had some time !

Its a decision design I would assume to keep the battles and environments challenging.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins (PC) Review @ GH

I understand that, but it's unrealistic and can kill all the satisfaction of having a high-level, well-armed character. What's the point if by the end of the game you still have to fear the same band of goblins? I hope there will be mods for this.
The review is nice, though.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins (PC) Review @ GH

This game doesn't run AS great as I was expecting (could be a driver performance issue, using the 195.39 betas), and the interface is slightly overwhelming but other than that it looks like I'll spend many hours on this one.

Graphics, like most people are saying, aren't technically amazing, but they get the job done for the game. I also thought it was wunderbar to see my mother (from the starting area) covered in blood as she helped me fight some of the enemies in early game.

I haven't really progressed far into the game yet, so I can't critique much yet; but from what I played so far, there weren't any areas where I felt bored, or even rushed for that matter.

Oh, and I can't wait to see some of the mods for this game.

Is it a specific section (boss) are you stuck in/at or is it just all impossible at this point?

im not saying any of its impossible, but after 20 reloads on a normal enemy fight, its getting damn old.

the mini boss fights are even worse. i spent about 2hrs working a way to slowly pull different enemy bunches, all with out pulling the mini boss. who then destroyed my main tank in about 2 hits.

Looks like DL will finish the game in 9 to 10 hundred hours lol.

Did you try patch?

I am still downloading so I haven't tried the game yet.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins (PC) Review @ GH

I've done some research and I'm pretty sure my performance issue isn't driver-based. The game will use 100% CPU at all times, regardless of what is going on. Also, I'm not sure if this is normal but the game will also easily use more than a gig of memory on the main menu alone, and even more during gameplay.

BioWare says they are looking into it for anyone else recieving poor performance.

EDIT: The 1.01 patch doesn't help.

Game looks fantastic, I simply don't have the time at the moment for this kind of game though, and already have a backlog of cool-looking RPGs I've purchase on sale, and not had time to play.

Not having played the game at all, I'm going to guess you need to change your style of play. I'm assuming this is similar to Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment in battles, in that you can't simply charge from encounter to encounter (like KotOR, Diablo, Vampire - Bloodlines, etc.); I'm guessing you have to scout out encounters, prep your party, and make use of available spells, items, etc. Hoarded items, spells, abilities, aren't good for much.

Of course, I could be horribly wrong, I'm just guessing from my experience with the infinity engine games, which I know inside and out.

Also, the new patch made easy mode easier.

i think its a combo of that, and for what ever reason, the early levels seem hard as hell. im at lvl 8/9/10 right now, and my group is blowing through most fights just fine now. its made the game a hell of alot more enjoyable.

I might give this game a try then...I too am normally more of a FPS or FPS/RPG combo type of gamer and I've never played any traditional RPG's...they never seemed like my type of game...the only semi RPG's I've played are the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, although those are more FPS

but I might give Dragon Age: Origins a try based on that review...the fact that you stated that you are not normally a fan of this genre but consider this game epic says a lot

John wanted to point out that there is a reported case of a huge game ruining bug which you can read about over here (game developers are in talking about it also). His advice is to save, and save often

BioWare : Dragon Age : my quest is bugged , need serious help.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins (PC) Review @ GH

Thanks for the heads up on this guys. From reading around their forums trying to discern what not to do to fall into this trap. Saving often will assuredly help, some over there was talking about losing 20 hrs of game play. But this seems to center around the dwarven area Orzammar, and 2 political faction from the area. Seems that you cannot even talk to both sides, even if you decline to do quests for one of the leaders prefering to go the other route, quests for both characters appear, and after that a catch 22 happens somtime after.

Since im just now setting out to try to honor the treaties and head for redcliff i will avoid the dwarven area for now and see how it plays out.

Also looks to be a new patch just out 1.01b. It doesnt seem to adress this issue. I haven't installed it yet.

BioWare Social Network

Quote:
Dragon Age: Origins 1.01b

Patch details:

  • fixed potential corruption of character statistics
  • fixed portrait appearance sliders when importing a character from the downloadable Character Creator
  • fixed import for preset face settings from the downloadable Character Creator
  • made Easy difficulty easier
  • slightly increased attack, defense, and damage scores for all party members at Normal difficulty
  • fixed video issues when running on a very wide screen display, including ATI Eyefinity displays
  • fixed an issue with Vista and Windows 7 Game for Windows Explorer
  • fixed an issue with Dragon Age and Windows Game Explorer
  • updated Visual C runtime libraries
now that i look at it more i see this new b patch just adds the last 3 fixes, mainly dealing with the "Games for Window" explorer, updated runtimes to address the issues there.

Yes, BioWare closed those forums today (the 17th). The Dragon Age forum is now located on the BioWare Social Network so that there can be a centralized community.
