Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

Just Cause 2 Review
_________________

The first Just Cause required more suspension of disbelief than your average Hollywood blockbuster and this turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. Some lauded its over the top non-stop action and stunts while others labeled it as simply trying too hard, all brawn and no brains. Flying round a huge island in a stolen plane, only to jump out at will with a parachute and kill some bad guys before the character has even hit the ground...

Re: Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

Why "more advanced graphics cards, such as Nvidias upcoming GTX 480"? Anything that won't appear on a Radeon 5870? If so, why not detail it? If not, why not use the existing Radeon cards as a reference?

Or is it just info that can be told until the cards are released?

Re: Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

I went and did three things to enjoy Just Cause 2 as much as possible:

-Hooked up my PC to my 50" Plasma tv
-Ran 10ft optical cable from sound card to receiver with DDLive 5.1
-Bought Wired Xbox 360 Gamepad for Windows

So far it's been a blast, although aside from a couple of PS3 games I have barely ever used a gamepad for shooters so it's really tough to use the grappling hook to attach objects to each other or grab fast moving vehicles. There's quite a bit of auto aim of course but I don't mind it too much, though I would like to be able to disable it if possible.

The graphics are fantastic in some areas like beaches and underwater. The cities look good but there's really not much going on so it doesn't exactly brim with detail. For the most part it runs good on my PC at max settings but I tend to switch of SSAO now and then because it can chug. I'm not crazy about the sound effects, some are ok while others are massively loud. Explosives are so jarring I had to turn my subwoofer to the lowest setting and turn the volume down low or the sound will travel through my entire apartment complex

Re: Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

There is a need for some very precision aiming in the game, I don't know how you manage with the gamepad, even with autoaim (I think there is an option to turn it off).

I tried the PC demo, keyboard and mouse, and it felt very natural.

You're telling me! I don't know if I can play with the gamepad any longer. On average it takes 2-3 attempts at each mission to succeed and the lastest one I failed at least 10 times when I know it would have been easy on with a mouse. It takes too much time to accurately aim the grappling hook or when you have weak weapons and have to kill a lot of enemies...sucks when you're racing against a time limit.

Why? It's always good to have it as an option.

Re: Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

GTAIV PC had auto lock too but you can turn it off, don't see that option in JC2. I switched between the mouse and gamepad a few times but ended up sticking with the 360 gamepad. I realized I just had to use better tactics (this being one of the faction missions where I have to disarm 4 bombs in a couple of minutes..I ended up with over a minute to spare once I got it down pat.

Also I think there is no way to zoom by right mouse button like in other games so they just used auto lock.

Re: Just Cause 2 (PC) @ GH

I installed this over the weekend. My installer said it will only play on Win Vista/7. Good thing I have dual OS.

The benchark utility is very useful. The game itself...let's just say the opening scene alone is a let down. You really have to suspend belief. I didn't bother to finish the first level.

You should go back and give it another try sometime, just turn off your brain first. This game isnt about realism, just blowing things up and having as much mindless fun as possible while doing so.

Well, I guess my initial impression is a bit unfair as I was alternating between Bad Company 2 and Just Cause 2, and I prefer more realism in games. So in effect I was subconsciously comparing the two.

The GH review did gave me a heads up about how the game plays. I don't blame GH for this, though.

I guess what I'm saying is JC2 is not my type of game...

Good, good. It's a great RPG game (so far I know only one person who agrees with me lol), but it has horrific voice acting. If you ever play the game (and I recommend it if you like fantasy RPGs), turn the voice volume down and the subtitles on. Your young ears will thank you in the long run.
