Optical output

I am running an audigy with the latest kx driver and i can't get the digital optical output to work. it just doesn't send anything to it (evidently as the other end of the cable doesn't light up red).
Any help on how to fix this will be greatly appriciated.
p.s. does the source i am playing have to be digital or should it be able to send any analog sound from the computer?
