Stutter playback - except when moving the mouse

The title says it all. Whenever I play something in any app, the sound will stutter (edit: it will not go forward). The only way to play normally is to move the mouse.

The only change I've made to the computer was adding a hard drive, a sata one.

I thought maybe IRQ conflicts or something, but it looks ok, right?

kx 3537, SB0060, XP sp2. two hitachi sata disks. asrock 939dual-sata2. a64 3200+ @ 2500. 1GB ram.

- check if there are IRQ sharing --> chnge the USB mouse into another USB controllers port
- set PCI Latency for graphics to 64

Changed the usb for mouse -> no playback at all.
That app didn't give any errors.
How do I set pci latency? You sure this could help?

Thanks!

Also,
- do you have powerful enough PSU?
- which SATA controller is there (on IRQ list, only IDE controllers are listed)?

I have a 550W psu. Should be enough, even tho it's a cheap LC.

I actually don't have a sata controller, I think, except if there's some Windows one. I don't like the "safely remove" icon, that's the primary reason. But I will eventually try to install some SATA and SATA-II drivers.

ps. If I remove the mouse from the usb there's no playback either.

I tried everything. Still the same. Sata drivers didn't help either.

But there are both the usb controller and the audio card on IRQ 21. Guess that's the problem.

Is there ANY other solution than to change the audio card to another PCI? That would be the very last option to me.

Ok, I solved it.

The problem was more of an electrical/mechanical one, it seems... (unless these events were a pure coincidence):

I removed the soundcard and put it back in the same slot. Also reinstalled the drivers. It all worked. Then I tried connecting the speakers to another output-> the old problem came back. Turn off, put the SB out/in, boot, worked. Then, while playing something in Winamp, I tried to close the PC case, by putting on the metal panel. At that moment the pc froze and there was a high-pitch beep sound coming from the speakers.
Restarting solved the issue.
I'm not sure that the cause of the pc-freezing was a hit-> misplacing of the PCI card(s), because I merely touched it with the panel. I think that it might have been, because the panel is metallic-> causing some interference. (Same thing for when trying the other output.) Don't know if that makes ANY sense, but the case received many way stronger hits while it was closed and none caused any issues. (Even now, immediately before and after putting this panel on I gave it some punches, because I wanted to check this myself.)
This pc-freezing happened twice, while trying to put on the panel. Then I simply turned off the pc and put the panel on-> no problems.

It had me puzzled, because of the mouse-movement related playback and the fact that it didn't work if I used different USB ports...

From time to time, especially when adding or removing hardware in your system, you'll need to "reseat" devices. What probably occured is you unknowingly rubbed against the sound card and it just came ever so slightly out of the pci slot. I myself, just for good measure, always reseat everything anytime I go into my pc (including the RAM). Also check and make sure every power plug, ide cable, sata cable, you name it is firm and in place on both ends. I know this my first post but what better way to start off :-D

That's exxagerating. There's no need to check the plugs each and every time you use your PC.

I didn't state everytime you go to use the PC but to do it anytime you open the side of the case. I agree you don't have to do it when you just use the PC there's no reason to. :-D
