rolleyes Recording on EMU APS E-Card *newbie*

SYS SPEC:
ASUS A7V333 w/C-Media 8738 onboard sound
AMD XP 1800
E-MU APS E-Card
256MB DDR PC2100 RAM
G4 TI4600 128
WINDOWS XP SP1

Hi,
I have the EMU APS E-Card and I’m trying to do vocal recording.

I have onboard sound which I have enabled for my speakers (sound playback) but have kX Wave EMUAPS [a800]0/1 as my recording device (Sound recording). Now I have a SHURE SM58 MIC with XLR to hookup.

On the back of my E-MU APS E-Card, I have 2 XLR in and 2 XLR outs and 1 S/PDIF in and out. Now I was thinking I could take the line form my MIC to a 2-way splitter to go in to the 2 XLR in. I did this and still no good from the mic (Mic does work with other devices).

In windows settings, I have my speakers with microphone unmuted. I know about the E-Card, but is it possible to do it the way I’m trying without going broke having to buy so much just to record?

I just need to record vocals into wavs (I have software to do this). If anyone can help me with the settings in kX Manager or give me any advise, it would help out a lot.

Thank you for your time

Sounds like you need a preamp. The analog inputs on the APS Ecard are line-ins - you can't plug a microphone into a line level input directly (well, the plug might fit into the jack, but that's as far as it goes ;-).

Also, a splitter would not be necessary - your mic is mono, so you only need to use either the A1 or the A2 mono input (you can mix to stereo in the kX DSP window if you want to).

Best of luck,

/Hanz

Hey Hans,
Thanks for the reply .

My apologies for my amateur understanding of your explanation. The preamp your talking about, is that the E-Drive? If you or anyone can, please explain further on the Pre-Amp. My Mic is a dynamic one and not a Phantom.

About mixing to stereo in kX DSP.. I did not understand that part.

So based on my information, is it possible to record with my mic? If not, any hardware recommendations?

Thank you for your time.

I used to use the APS for recording samples a while ago. The EMU APS full suite has the card, and then some people have the E-Drive which is the front panel with a headphone out, and 2 analog inputs (not to mention the SPDIF IN/OUT). If you have a dynamic mic, you can just hook it up to one of the analog inputs on the E-drive and select MIC with the black button next to it.

IF you are putting the mic into the card itself, I'm afraid it only allows LINE level input. Your mic will need a preamp unit (this having nothing to do with the card itself, it's a complete different piece of equipment), in which it's output will go into the card's input. Since the APS card itself has a stereo IN, and the mic is mono, you only need to set record on the left or right channel of the card input (whichever you have the mic plugged into).

You will get okay results with the APS analog IN, but I would personally use a preamp if you are recording vocals. I never got a 'creamy' sound with the APS in's to be honest, but I already upgraded my studio to ADAT by the time I was recording vocals professionally.
