Vista <> Surround

At first sorry for my bad english!

Introduction:
Me an some other guys had problems with kx-project (release 3538m) and Windows Vista. My problem was i could set 5.1 in kx-project and upmix worked wonderful but Vista just had set stereo. When I wanted to set it to 5.1 surround the reaction was something like "is not supported by yout hardware". So I had no real surround sound, e.g. in CS:Source. The game said that Windows has stereo set so it will not set it to 5.1!

Solution:
follow this steps:
 1. Control Panel > Sound > click on your soundcard > property
 2. click on extended > now choose 24 Bit, 48000 Hz
 3. try with Test if it works
 4. at this time I removed both settings below
 5. click OK and now on configuration and set 5.1 Surround
For me it works fine and I hope also for you!

Sorry for my bad english and if some terms are wrong but I had to translate them to english.

Would be nice if you give me some reactions. Thanks

Bye

that means that Vista stops to output to "kX Wave ... 0/1" and starts to output to some other port - "kX Wave ... 4-9" i suppose. If so, you can get upmixing back by swapping 0/1 and 4/5 wires inside kX DSP but that would mean that real surround sources will be upmixed too and therefore completely messed up. So.. that just means that with current state of things you have to choose what you need more - "real surround and fair stereo (without upmixing)" or "fake surround (upmixing) and no real 5.1"...

Vista 5.1 Sound

Hi,
I've been trying your "method" but unfortunately it doesn't work for me, when i change to 24bit sound there is window which says that it's not supported by card.
I think it could be because iv'e got 16bit version of my soundcard (SB Live 5.1 - SB0222).
I must wait for new driver version 3539.

I tried this, and Vista finally allowed 5.1 sound, and the Vista speaker test for 5.1 actually worked. However, when I went into the kX speaker setup and tried to do the speaker test there, I got the Windows Error "Failed to produce sound" for each of the 5.1 speakers. Also, when trying to play Counterstrike: Source the 5.1 does not work (it is only in stereo, and sounds muffled). So Vista can produce the 5.1 but... I don't know if kX can actually tell that the 5.1 is enabled and that might be why it doesn't work in-game.

same here - no real 5.1, 4 devices in the sound section in ctrl pnl (0/1, 4/5, 6/7, 8/9) the system recognizes only the 0/1 as speakers and when i try to set up a 5.1 config it says to me that my device doesnt support it.
i`m using the SB0220 card (kx recognizes it az sb0222 but i doubt that this is a part of the problem)

@Max M.
...or I have to switch everytime I play or listen to music

@wpinacz
szkoda! musisz poczekać

@naters22
perhaps you have to try another settings. In some cases I get same error like you or my sound scratch.
It's right, kX says that it can not run the surround-test but in Vista it works.

Very strange! Oh, I forgot to say, that I'm using a AUDIGY 2 ZS (PCI). I hope the next driver will come soon!

now i guess that you've got your results 'cause MSV switches to the 'Wave HQ' port (not to 'Wave 4...13' as i supposed above), that's why the others can't repeat the trick with their Live!s.

Yeah! every time i hear the word 'Hope' i recall one exactly on topic russian song ("Надежда - мой компас земной, а удача награда за верность!")

vista support is currently experimental
M$ has changed a lot in the way audio is supposed to work...
for instance, surround sound is handled in a different way
there's no hardware-accelerated directsound
etc.
pls don't expect it to work until Vista support is finally finished
--
as for the 'solution': yes. Windows switched to work with the p16v unit

SB Live 5.1 - SB0222 5.1 sound

Hi all,
I've been testing vista and my sound card and i found that when i choose 16bit/96000Hz sound i'm able to test and set ALL speakers (5.1) but the sound quality is verry poor.
I can hear sound from all speakers separately.
If i choose lower Hz than 96000 (e.g. 48000 or 44100) i'm able only to set the speakers as mono or stereo.
Anyone could help solving this issue ?
Thanx for any help.

Edit: I found that when i choose 16bit/96000Hz i can choose stereo mode and it works normal but only in 5.1 mode sound quiality is poor.

I just wanted to add my experience to this. I had the same issue after following the instructions above. I've been able to fix my problem on both my Audigy2 and my Audigy2 ZS. Please note, I don't record with these two systems, but I needed 5.1, and liked the output of Surrounder+. The big problem seems to be that Vista switches the Front L and R channels from [8000] Stereo_L and [8001] Stereo_R on xrouting, to [8002] nw and [8003] ne. The other outputs of xrouting worked fine as they were, your mileage may vary.

For my HTPC, it works decent, 5.1 sources still have their channels, though Surrounder might be toying with them, they still sound good. (I use analog out) Sound quality is the same as 2 channel pushing through surrounder+ was before.

If I'm way off, please disregard, but I felt it might be useful to someone else.
