Driver Saving and Loading
Hello, I’m new here.
I really like these drivers, there’re quite a bit better then Creatives drivers. I have a couple of questions though: (1) I’m having problems saving and or loading the changes I make in the kxmixer. I save the settings, but the mixer nor the settings load when Windows starts. How do I get them to automatically start after Windows loads? (2) These driver work nicely with most of the games that I have, except for one. It plays the sound effects just fine but there’s no music. I had music and sound effects with my previous drivers. Is there anything I need to install to get this to work again? (3) Finally: where can I get the latest drivers for my soundcard? Are there overnight beta projects I could use (willing to test on my computer)? Thanks for reading. Comp Specs (some): OS: Windows XP SP2 Soundcard: SB Audigy 2 Z/S Gamer Driver version: 3538m-full Last edited by Crystallization; Apr 5, 2007 at 08:52 AM. |

Hi Crystallization:
First, maybe many don't want to strain their eyes trying to read your posts with the dull color font you're using. You might want to stick with the default white color font. I had trouble seeing your last post! I had to magnify the page to 150%, and it was still hard to read! Did you uninstall all the Creative software before you installed the kX Project driver? Your problem is unusual, to me. Also, maybe your download of the kX Driver was corrupted. Did you try to download it, again? |

My guess is that you are using some startup manager that has removed (or modified) kX's startup entry in the Windows registry.
Check the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run The above key should contain the following (String Value): Name: kX Mixer Value: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kxmixer.exe --startup (assuming that your Windows directory is C:\WINDOWS\) |

You're probably right. I'm using TweakXP and that's set to turn off automatic startups in the system registry, but instead I'm using the Startup Folder. It loads the kxmixer but it won't load the settings in that same folder. BTW, I got it to work once or twice but after a couple of extra changes and saves it doesn't work any longer.
Thank you guys for your help, and continued help, I hope there's a way to solve this. Oh, and sorry about the strange font thing, I didn't have any problems reading it but I guess that's just me.

It is the '--startup' command line switch that restores settings, so add that to the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder and it should do the same thing.

I should have first started off by stating that "I am a complete noob". I go into the run command and type "regedit", I find the path that you gave me earlier: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run, and find the value "C:/Windows", throw it in the Startup Folder and now the mixer loads.
As for the settings, that's where I run into some problems. I change my settings, and save them to the default folder (kx audio drivers/3538). After I save and close the mixer, I then go to the folder where I saved the settings, throw it into the Startup Folder and restart Windows. After Windows loads the kxmixer will load also, but I'm forced to manually go into the startup folder and double-click "kxcontrol" (that's what I named the settings) for the setting to take place. What's up? Am I still doing something wrong? |

The settings are saved to the registry when kX Mixer exits.
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\kxmixer.exe --startup" restores the saved settings from the registry. Put a shortcut to the above command line in the Startup folder (and get rid of the other stuff). kX settings files should be used for manually loading different configurations using the 'Load Settings' menu option, not for restoring settings at Windows startup. i.e. I suggest copying the 'kX Mixer' shortcut from the 'kX Audio Driver' folder on the 'Start' menu, to the Windows 'Startup' folder, and then edit the properties of the (new copy) shortcut and add --startup to the end of the 'Target' command line, so that it reads: C:\WINDOWS\system32\kxmixer.exe --startup Beyond the above, I do not really see the point of disabling the 'Run' key items in the registry, only to move them to the Windows 'Startup' folder. Why not just disable the things that you do not want to start with Windows, and leave the rest alone? Last edited by Russ; Apr 6, 2007 at 10:36 PM. |

Thank you very much for your help Russ, That last trick of copying the program from the start menu and putting it in the startup folder worked. I did't know that it wasn't supposed to load them by default, but I'm glad it's working none the less.
Well now that my first question has been answered, I hope it's not too much of a bother for someone to answer my last two: No music in a certain game (not too important) Link to the latest beta or overnight builds of kx drivers (much more important)

2) For that game you mention, change to kX wave 4/5 for playback device through Control Panel/Sounds And Audio Devices/Audio tab and voice tab. This may solve that probem of no music.
3)The most recent beta driver for kX is posted here in the General Discussion forum. You have to keep coming and check for a sticky thread, near the top of the forum until you see news that a new driver has been released. You have the newest beta, .3538m. |

For the problem with the game, try lowering the hardware acceleration when playing the game (leave it set to full when not playing the game).
Under 'Sounds and Audio Devices' -> Volume Tab - Advanced Speaker Settings -> Performace Tab - Hardware Acceleration. You will probably need to use the Basic Acceleration setting. BTW: If it is midi music, make sure that you have soundfonts loaded for the kX Synths. Last edited by Russ; Apr 7, 2007 at 12:57 AM. |

Thanks allot you guys and or girls, I'll try your suggestions and see if any of them work. I don't know if this will help. but here's a link to the game that I've downloaded: http://www.reflexive.com/Dynasty.html?CID=0
The music is quite nice and I've been trying to listen to it for a long time, so resolving this problem will be truly wonderful. Oh and thanks for the information on the drivers; glad to know I'm up-to-date.

For that game, lowering the Hardware Acceration to the Basic setting will let you hear the music, but remember to set it back to Full when not playing the game.

Thank you good people for helping me out! Every one of my questions was answered, and everything works to satisfaction.
So this "lowering the hardware acceleration" thing, is it a limitation of the drivers? Is it possible that future updates will allow me to keep the hardware acceleration on high and still get the music to work? Anyway, thanks again for all the help.

No, that is a common problem with any audio driver that uses DirectX Hardware Accleration. Some games just do not seem work well with it (sounds may cut in or out, or be missing all together, etc).
