most tv is via an analogue transmission - so it's equivalent to FM radio
digital tv is probably 20bit/48khz (Dolby Digital) unless they're using a HD codec

TV and FM - both have a real world freq response typically about 50 Hz to 15Khz. (varies widely - this is more on high end equipment)
Theoretical CD quality is usually reported up to 20Khz - but then theres the whole amplification stages, speakers etc... that usually is less. Car stereos in particular are notorious for using specs to confuse consumers with varying conditions to thir advertised ratings. edit: Sample rates - eh... figure TV quality as like 30Khz (roughly 2x freq response) - but you may have heard of a sample rate of 32Khz - the added 2 Khz is likely for the anticipated anti-aliasing filter loss of fidelity. Just as 44Khz - gives a range of up to 20Khz. And you can never really compare analog 'headroom' with any bit depth... analog by nature is infinite. So - in summation: TV/FM Quality (IIRC TV and FM use almost identical systems) is less than CD but better than AM Last edited by Maddogg6; Sep 19, 2007 at 04:32 AM. |
