have mic but audio doesn't work

A new twist on the problem everyone seems to have here.

I had the audio but no mic problem first. I followed the "My mic doesn't work" guide and can now hear the mic only when I unmute it on the AC97 page of kX. The program I'm tryign to use the mic with, ventrilo, also picks up the input.

Now my problem is that I hear no sound output with anything.

I've checked all the settings on the In'n'Out page; all the outputs are up and only the AC97 input is up. The master recording and wav recording levels are up as well.

I have old SB live! card, it shows up as kX Wave CT4670 10k1 [6400].

Anyone have any ideas?

Assuming that you did not change anything in the DSP (and that the speaker cables did not get pulled out), it sounds as though AC97 may have gotten a little screwy. Try Resetting AC97 (there is a button for this on the AC97 page of kxmixer).

Also verify that kX is still the default device for audio playback in the Windows Control Panel.

Nope. I checked the connections, and reset the AC97. I also tried doing the mic setup steps backwards to try and get sound back, but nothing there. Everything is still the right device in control panel and none of the volume settings are to mute.

and as I was typing this, I found the problem. 'Swap front and rear mode' had gotten toggled somehow.

thanks for your help anyway!
