That's quite cool. However, it's not completely official--the ALSA guy posted a single sentence to the mailing list: "I might be able to comment on this once I get the datasheets from Creative in the next week or so.". It was in response to the release from the competing open source sound system OSS of a version with rudimentary X-Fi support. I guess OSS guys got some specs already? They have not reverse engineered the windows driver, have they?

The wording on the Creative open source site is quite strange indeed: "A customer sent the following message: Open source support (beta) for X-fi announced...." link

If this makes old Audigys cheaper, I'm all for it.

Hopefully, we are one step closer to having the functionality of KX with the power of the X-fi DSP chip...I can only imagine the DSP setups possible! -Hopefully someday.

I would be "happy as a little girl" to see KX-FI! I think this also creates the possibility of an *open* version of kx for x-fi, since Eugene has said in the past that he is under NDA from Creative Labs for 10k1/2. Here's what was said at Gmane Loom

I now had some datasheets for the x-fi.
I think the first thing we should do is create a GPL version of the
header files.
Shall I do that task?

James
