Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
Hi,
I'm trying to connect my Edirol UA-25 to an Audigy 2 card (SB0240) via digital coaxcial cable using either "SPDIF0 in" or "CD Digital In" of Audigy 2. "SPDIF/I2S Status" window shows the following information. A coaxcial cable from From UA-25 to "CD Digital In" of Audigy 2: SPDIF Inputs: [R-Rate Locked; S-Stream Locked; V-Valid Audio] spdif A: 2109204 Freq: 48002 [R] [S] [V] || 24bits/SR unspec. spdif B: unused spdif C: unused or same as B I2S Inputs: (0): 96000Hz [R] (1): 96000Hz [R] (2): 96000Hz [R] SPDIF Outputs: (0): 2109204 (1): 2109204 (2): 2109204 (24 bits / 48000 Hz) SPDIF Extended status: (0): 24bits/48000Hz (1): 24bits/48000Hz (2): 24bits/48000Hz p16v: PB: (bypass) I2S Out:96000Hz SPDIF Out bypass)Rec: (0): 0 [u] (1): 0 [u] (2): 0 [u] (3): 0 [u] A coaxcial cable from From UA-25 to "SPDIF0 in" of Audigy 2: SPDIF Inputs: [R-Rate Locked; S-Stream Locked; V-Valid Audio] spdif A: unused spdif B: 2109204 Freq: 48002 [R] [S] [V] || 24bits/SR unspec. spdif C: unused or same as B It seems to me that the digital signal is received correctly in both cases and detected as valid audio. However, I can't get any sound out from analog outputs. I've turned on both "CD Digital In" and "Optical/Coaxial SPDIF" in in the kX Mixer. When I connect Peak meters to the respective prolog outputs in kX DSP, the meters show no signal. So, obviously the digital signal is not going in the DSP. Why? NOTE: If you wonder how I am getting a coaxial SPDIF out of UA-25, the answer is that I've soldered my own coaxial output in parallel to the optical trasmitter IC of UA-25 and as far as I know it seems to be working according to the "SPDIF/I2S Status" window of kX. I have a jumper cable between pins 25 and 35 in AD_EXT, if that's relevant. ----Hardware / Software configuration--------------- Driver Name:kX Audio Driver (Debug) Driver Date: Apr 5 2008 03:04:18 Driver Version: 5.10.00.3541 - debug DB Name:LiveBay0 SB0240 10k2 [dc00] PCI Information: Device: 41102 Subsys: 10021102 ChipRev: 4 Card is '10k2' Card has MPU device Card model is '5.1' Card is Audigy2-compatible Card HAS AC97 codec Codec name: SigmaTel STAC9721/23 3D Extension: SigmaTel 3D Enhancement Codec is 2.0 compliant Capabilities[6940] : DAC resolutions : -16-bit- -18-bit- ADC resolutions : -16-bit- -18-bit- Ext Capabilities [200]: -slot/DAC mappings- Port: dc00 Irq: 0x10(16) Playback buffer: 20a0 Record buffer: 4000 Number of AC3 buffers: 4 Tank memory: 256 kb GSIF buffer: 256 samples OS version: [2 5 1 Service Pack 3; 2 5 1 Service Pack 3; 156 148] Last edited by user4711; Apr 1, 2009 at 04:05 PM. You enabled those sliders on the Ins and Outs page of kxmixer (as opposed to the Recording page)?

Yes, levels are set to 0.
There's a little SPDIF square appearing at the bottom right of my screen on boot up. I guess that also indicates that that I have a proper SPDIF connection. I will try the previous version of the kX driver and see what happens. I can't think of trying anything else right now. |

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
I tried kX driver 3539 and also Creative's driver. Still no sound or signal entering DSP. As the same problem exists with both drivers, I guess this must be some sort of hardware issue or is it?

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
Hmm, looking up info on the Edirol UA-25, it appears to output at 24 bit/96 kHz. I am not completely sure how the card handles 24/96 input (I do not know if it is auto resampled to 48 kHz, or if it is auto-routed to P16v or what (someone else could probably give you more info on that (my card does not have P16V, and I do not have any digital sources that are more than 16/48)). You might try enabling Direct SPDIF Recording and see if you are able to record anything. Also check out the P16V plugin and the 24/96 Router.

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
In the advanced mode of Edirol UA-25 sample rate can be selected by a switch. Alternatives are 44,1 kHz, 48 kHz or 96 kHz.
In the standard mode (16/44,1) SPDIF status windows of kX shows the following information for SPDIF0 in (spdif B): SPDIF Inputs: [R-Rate Locked; S-Stream Locked; V-Valid Audio] spdif A: unused spdif B: 109204 Freq: 44102 [R] [S] [V] || 19bits/SR unspec. spdif C: unused or same as B P16V plugin does not output anything in kX DSP. EDIT: Edirol in 24/96 mode: SPDIF Inputs: [R-Rate Locked; S-Stream Locked; V-Valid Audio] spdif A: unused spdif B: a109204 Freq: 96005 [R] [S] [V] || 24bits/SR unspec. spdif C: unused or same as B |

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
There's no signal while recording or direct recording. There's no output to SPDIF out jack when "SPDIF by-pass" option is on. I tried with both 24/48 and 24/96 signals.
P16V plugin does not ouput anything. Chaning 24/96 Router options does not change anything. Does anyone know how "Input/Output Status" (SPDIF/I2S status) window gets its information about SPDIF inputs? |

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
I think it is a function of the hardware and the information is obtained by just reading the status registers.

that's pretty strange.
btw, *just in case*: >Yes, levels are set to 0. Have you unmuted them?

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
Yes, I have always unmuted the inputs that I'm using.
I tried to establish the same digital connection between the UA25 unit and a SB Live Value card (CT4670) that I previously used. I tried connecting UA25 to "CD SPDIF" and "SPDIF0 in" using all the sample rate/sample size options. Excluding 24/96 mode the status of SPDIF input was always "[R] [S]". V for valid audio was always missing unlike with my Audigy 2 card. In 24/96 mode connection could not be established at all. How about that? EDIT: I guess I could use both cards at the same time to see if they can talk to each other via SPDIF inputs and outputs. If data transfer should work both ways, then there could be somethng wrong with the data that US25 is sending. EDIT2: SPDIF from Audigy to Live works OK although [V] flag for valid audio is still missing. [V] flag can not be trusted? SPDIF from Live to Audigy is not working. Why? Live is sending 24/48 but Audigy reports receiving 20/48. So, 24/48 from Audigy to Live is working, but 24/48 from UA25 to Live is not. Still something incompatible with UA25 output? Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
Are you using SPDIF Bypass on the Live? (SPDIF Bypass is used to pass SPDIF input directly to SPDIF output of the same card, not for regular audio playback)
I think SPDIF Bypass is limited to 20 bits on 10k1 models. Also, I think there maybe a bug with SPDIF Bypass on some models. With my Live! 5.1 card, SPDIF Bypass (from CD Digital which is my only SPDIF input on that card (shows as SPDIF A in I/O Status)) does not work unless I type "sptr 5e 0 3" in kX Console (which supposedly changes SPDIF Bypass to use SPDIF C instead of SPDIF A). My Audigy does not show the bit depth of the inputs (maybe that is an A2 only thing), so I cannot verify bit depth from my Live! 5.1 to my Audigy (outputs on my Live! 5.1 seem to always show as 24 bit, even with bypass enabled (which again, I am pretty sure is only 20 bit on this card), so I am not sure how reliable that info is. I think that maybe it (output status info) is not updated at all when in bypass mode since the other info is not always accurate either). 10k1 models do not support 24/96. My Live! 5.1 also never appears to show the [V] flag (while my Audigy does), so maybe that flag is only used with 10k2 models. Last edited by Russ; Apr 4, 2009 at 07:40 PM. Reason: more info |

Confirmed. Have also never seen the Valid flag on Live! cards.

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
So, kX driver can detect a digital input valid although it can not pass it to DSP. I guess I just have to live with that.

Re: Need help: No sound from SPDIF0 in or CD Digital In
This is not true. SPDIF signals are routed to the DSP, if used the right plugins. There must be another issue with the card or the DSP settings or finally with the signal itself. Anyway, SPDIF signals from the Live! routed to the Audigy must work. Otherwise something is wrong.
