Audigy + outboard effect + DAW = possible?

I'm trying to hook up an external effects box to my Audigy, using the rear out as a send and line in as return. As always, the confusing and un-intuitive DSP window makes me want to weep. So I have to ask: would it be possible to set everything up so that I can access the send effect from my DAW on a per-channel basis? Or am I wasting my time?

After having some major issues with feedback as the wet signal was fed back into the fx box again, I managed to disable AC97 from being sent to the rear output. But that gives me a 100% wet signal all the time, on *everything*, and obviously that's not what I want. I would like to be able to control send levels from my DAW.

If it helps, I'm using REAPER.

I am not completely sure of the specifics of how you want to use the external effect box (from within Reaper), but you do realize that it would have (at least) double the latency, right? i.e. You would be adding an extra round trip (through ASIO, the cards hardware, and external hardware) on that signal path.

Russ, I'm well aware of the latency issue. On reverb it's not a big deal though, and that's what I'm going to use the h/w unit for.

Anyway, I've solved it. This question grew out of the frustration with getting REAPER's native hardware insert plugin to work, and I got the idea that I might somehow be able to do it with kX instead. As it turns out, I just needed to switch to a different ASIO output pair on the master to avoid feedback problems, and now Reainsert works just as expected.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Re: Audigy + outboard effect + DAW = possible?

The DSP is not that complicated. There are many DSP configs you could use to do what you want.

e.g.
Maybe try something like this.

With the above config:
SRC plugins are your audio sources.
ADC plugin is for Line In (your return).
MX6 is used to adjust levels.
kxlt is your outputs (1st output is analog front, second output is analog rear (your send))

With MX6:
The first slider controls your dry level for the first signal.
The second slider controls your send level for the first signal.
The third slider controls your dry level for the second signal.
The fourth slider controls your send level for the second signal.
The sixth slider controls your wet level (or you can use the slider in ADC).
The MAIN slider controls your volume for the front.
The RECORD slider can be used to adjust the final send level (mix).

Again, that is just an example of one possible way to do it in the DSP.
(MX6 also has SEND outputs and sliders that could be used instead, but with the above, you can monitor all levels on the built in peak meters (again, there are many ways to do things in the DSP))

[EDIT]
Just saw your reply...
Yeah, you are better off using a custom DSP config for stuff like that, as the default DSP config is really for general use, and if you do not fully understand how signals are routed and mixed in the default DSP config, you are likely to have problems such as that.
