Trying to record a video-game with commentary; volume issue

I've been using kX for quite a while now, but this is the first time I think I'm actually trying to do something more with it than just clone the output (as I did till now).

I wanted to record a Starcraft 2 replay with FRAPS and add my own commentary while I'm at it. I've already done such a thing, and the end result was that while everything worked more or less, my voice would drown during louder gameplay moments.

Thus, using ASP Compressor+ I routed the whole thing so that the game output would be leveled when I speak.

Everything was working well during the recording, but when I watched the final product it became apparent that it didn't work; the sound was just as loud when I was speaking as if I hadn't changed anything. Thus, I ask you: is there any way to fool FRAPS so that it doesn't record the original sounds but the ones modified by kX?

(Note: I'm using Windows 7, if that's of any importance...)

You should probably post a screen shot of your DSP config...

Beyond the above, make sure that all sliders on the Recording page of kxmixer are muted (except the Master Recording level). (Assumes that you are mixing the MIC signal and the compressor output in the DSP and sending that mix to the RecL/RecR pins of epilog).

Hmm... no, I'm not.

Hold on, let me make a screenshot.

This is my usual DSP:

The compressor is used for applications such as TeamSpeak or Ventrilo.

This is the DSP I tried using for FRAPS:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2i8g9sj.jpg
I tried to recreate the same thing, as with TeamSpeak or Ventrilo, but instead of the output from one of those applications, the second stream would be the microphone stream (from the Dynamics Processor).

The problem is I don't quite know how FRAPS captures the sound.

The only options it has are the following:
- Record W7 sound (checkbox with a stereo / multichannel setting)
- Record external input (checkbox); an edit field below, but only one option is available: Default Microphone (kX 10k2 Audio...)

When both options are used, both voices are recorded, but while I hear the compressor doing it's thing when I talk when making the recording, once I playback the whole thing the volume of the game sounds remains unchanged, and thus my voice is drowned in them.

Hmm, well as far as I can tell, FRAPS records the same way as Teamspeak or Ventrillo would... so your config should work. You can test this by disconnecting any connections to the WinMM Recording pins of k2lt (in which case, you should get no audio at all when recording in FRAPS).

Aside from the above, your config is a bit odd...

Are you using the bundled version of ProFX? The bundled version is old and buggy and may give you trouble. If you have a 32 bit OS, update to the current version of ProFx, if you are using a 64 bit OS, then I suggest using the default plugins instead (prolog, epilog, etc).

You have the MIC signal (? SRC [7]) taking two seperate paths that both (eventually) end up at the same place (WinMM Recording) and due to this, it is probably being recorded twice.

There is really no need for xrouting or Surrounder in that config, so I suggest removing them.

Disconnecting the WinMM pins means I get no voice if I speak to the microphone during a recording, but game sounds get recorded just fine, so I'm still unsure what to do. If you have any more ideas, I'd be grateful.

My apologies, I was making the screenshot in a hurry (after earlier failed attempts at recording the whole thing I reloaded my original DSP, and now quickly tried to recreate the one I used for the purposes of that post), thus the Mic signal being incorrectly routed (it should have been the signal from the Dynamics Processor... and it should have been routed to the Compressor, not the xrouting). So, yes, there are errors in the screenshot, but when I was trying to record the whole thing, it was OK.

Also, yes, I am using the bundled ProFX plugins and I'm using a 32 bit system; I'll update them right away (that is... if I find out where to download them from ), albeit I had no real bugs so far (unless this is the first one).

Finally, thanks for the suggestion; I've removed the Surround plugin.

Re: Trying to record a video-game with commentary; volume issue

Get the current version of ProFX here (follow link in first post): NEW: ProFx (3538) Update Incl. MX6 and AC97 (Note: ADC plugin is used instead of SRC for (AC97) MIC)

BTW: I tested FRAPS (with Starcraft (I do not have Starcraft 2) on WinXP) and for me, disconnecting MME recording results in no sound getting recorded at all.

Edit: I suggest a DSP config similar to this.

Re: Trying to record a video-game with commentary; volume issue

I've found a way... it's so simple, I can't believe I overlooked it.

I disabled FRAPs recording system sounds (it MAY be a Win7 issue that it kept recording the game sounds even after disconnecting the MME, and with that said, I'm not sure your suggested settings would work in my case), left voice recording on and then routed the system sounds through xrouting to be recorded as well.

Hmm, strange... In any case, I am glad that you got it working.
