Finer media-key control possible?

So, I have my headset connected directly to my sound-card, and this makes the lowest "notch" on my volume-wheel be about normal volume. The problem is that I sometimes want to hear what's going on around me... Is it possible to have the "notches" in smaller increments, thus allowing my family to communicate with me?

Why not just set the volumes in the KX mixer lower so the the lowest "notch" is barely lower than you want for normal use.... if you want to listen to it loud at times and that's not loud enough, re-adjust the KX mixer......
