Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Hello everyone,
I've ran into a problem. I've had KX mixer installed for about a year, and it's been working quite well. For some reason, all of that changed a few days ago. For some strange reason, I cannot get my microphone to register when I use skype, ustream, etc. I know the microphone works, as I can hear it through the speakers clearly. However, when I go to Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage audio devices .. I click on the "recording" tab, and the meter there doesn't register anything, even though I can clearly hear myself through the speakers. To boot, there's no microphone listed under the recording tab. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling kx software, but does no good. Should I consider the card as defective and buy a newer card with the native drivers that come with it? Thanks in advance, Ben P.S. I'm running Windows 7 x64 |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Check all your settings in KX mixer, both the "ins and outs" page and the "recording" page. Seems something has either muted one of the sliders or switched from MIC in to line or aux input.
You can of course buy a new card, but if this was working well enough and it's just a setting.......

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
So you've verified two things. MIC works and KX works. What did you do, or what happened, two days ago with Windows right before this happened? Add any new software? Hardware? Make any system changes? Did Windows make any system changes (updates, new drivers, etc.) even if it's not directly "sound" related?
I don't have Win7 so I can't give you anything specific to go on or where to make changes.

there was a huge update this past Tuesday, but they were mostly to address vulnerabilities. P.S. Now that you mentioned it, this problem started when I was having problems with Adobe Flash player, and it was suggested that I log in as admin (I run my account in standard/limited user mode for security reasons). When I did that, I did notice that my sound cut out. I fixed it after fiddling with some settings. However, ever since then, my microphone hasn't been working correctly. I hope this may help you determine what possibly could be causing the problem. |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Wonder if you changed something as "admin" that you can't get at as a limited user? Maybe you should log in as admin, uninstall and reinstall KX (should be installed as admin in Win7 anyways from what I've read) make all your settings while still logged in as admin, even after the reboot, and see if you can get it working again.
Hate to see you buy a new card when it's actually working.

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
To my surprise ... it did not install correctly under Admin. It did tell me that the installation was completely successfully and that I need to reboot. But after doing so, Kx mixer is nowhere to be found, and does not show up in the Add/Remove Programs either.
I will try again. I will uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot. See if this is just an anomaly. |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
The clicking noises is possibly from using Master Mixer as the default output device in Windows audio panel (that would be the default that Win7 selects) SPDIF/AC3 is the better output.

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
I got it to work ... in admin mode. Under standard user, I got the mic working, but the quality is very bad and the volume is low. I notice that in the FAQ section, it says that Windows 7 is not supported. Will that always be the case?
P.S. I will try the SPDIF/AC3 output. |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
I take it you think Windows 7 is not supported as the help file says: Windows 7 is not officially supported yet [April'2009].
however ... Sep 18, 2009, 10:22 AM 3550 released - x86 and x64 kx 3550 DOES support windows 7 - I think the help file is woefully out of date

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
So, I'm completely out of ideas. The mic does now work, but the quality is so bad that it's almost not worth it. I also notice that I can't hear myself through the speakers.
I Don't know how to realy fix this ... |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Not hearing the MIC through the speakers is a setting on the "ins and Outs" page of KX mixer. The MIC volume there or the AC97 volume if you are routing the MIC through there could be muted. If you are routing the MIC through AC97 there is a MIC boost available....... Should fix your low gain. Are you sure the MIC is plugged into the MIC jack and not the Line in?

If I use the boost, the volume goes up somewhat but is accompanied by lots of distortion. I can confirm though that I do hear myself just barely through the speakers when I turn up gain to maximum. |

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Going back to your original post..... maybe your card is defective....... If the MIC checks out on another system as good it shouldn't be doing that on the Live!. Are you sure the plug is fully inserted, does anything change if you wiggle it around a little?

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
Nothing. I do want to say that this does work fine if I signed in under Administrator. Is it possible to open a bug tracker or something to see if there's an issue with the drivers when used in standard user mode?

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
That's odd..... I thought you meant it didn't work no matter what you did, but it does work when you are logged in as admin? Works 100%?

Re: Microphone problem with Soundblaster
I'm wondering if this is more of a Windows issue, like the crackle sounds in Master Mixer. Win7 has some weird sound issues IMO...... Also, it was working and then something changed.... that change would have been in windows, not the driver. (you've reinstalled the driver.)
One last thing to try and I'm out of ideas..... Right click on the KX mixer, under settings, do a Reset global settings. You will have to un-mute MIC, etc. after that for function.
