SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
Hi.
I have bought an audio cable to connect my tv tuner card with my SB Live 5.1 AUX_IN port using kx project. It works, but only the right channel gets sound out. The cable is this one : IpShop.Gr | UNIVERSAL CD-ROM AUDIO CABLE 50CM CABLE-266 and its 3 wires connected on each end. Is it a mono cable? I use the cdrom audio plug on the first end for the SB Live 5.1 AUX_IN, and the 4-pin small plug from the other end for the tv tuner. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
You may need one that's 4 wires on both ends. It sounds like you don't have ground on that right channel. (the middle two pins are ground and some cards need all 4 wires, other cards combine those pins at the card and can work with only 3 wires)

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
Does that white - 4 pin plug not work? It seems that one should work, assuming that it fits on the header (it is hard to tell from the pic). If it does not fit, you could probably remove (it is usually not too difficult to slide them out) some of the wires/female connectors from the two 3 pin plugs (it seems you would want 1 white, 1 red, and 2 black), and connect them directly to the card's pins (with the 2 black one's in the middle).

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
The plug fits, but on the tv tuner end, the row of the cables is red, black, white, none.
The plugs of this cable miss 1 connection on the plug's center which makes one ground connection instead of two. But on the small four plug for the tv tuner end, the white cable which I think is the left channel is connected to a center ground pin. Last edited by blitter2; Dec 2, 2010 at 01:53 AM. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
No. The tv tuner card doesn't have the big cdrom plug like the picture you showed.
It utilizes the smaller 4 pin , not 3 pin. Like from my picture, that's what it fits. On my picture the one end of the cable except from the big cdrom plug gives as well small 4 pin and 3 pin as well. Maybe the small 4 pin is wired wrong though. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
Thanks for the info... I haven't been able to find any info about that connection on the TV card, nor any pictures of that card with the cable...
The closest I could find was some pictures of other Asus TV cards that use the same type of connector. e.g. This one which looks like it uses basically the same pinout as the sound card (though I did see one that looked the same as your cable (the plug all the way on the right)). BTW: You might try resetting AC97 just to be sure something is not screwy with it, before doing anything else... Assuming that (the picture (above)) is the correct wiring for your card too, you should be able to remove the white wire from the plug and move it over to the end. The smaller plugs are a little tricker, but basically you would just pry up on the little plastic tab (in front of the wire that you want to release) on the face of the plug (with a pin or something) and pull lightly on the wire. Once it is out, just slide it into the other hole. Last edited by Russ; Dec 3, 2010 at 01:23 AM. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
That is the correct cabling. White cable on the end pin at the small plug.
How is the cable from your picture called? Last edited by blitter2; Dec 4, 2010 at 10:58 AM. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
I do not think there is any standard name for it (i.e. it is an OEM cable). Unless you can get it from Asus, you will probably have to make your own, as I described in my last post (it is not difficult - picture).

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
I tried what you have said with a pin and I couldn't do it.
I then tried to pull the white cable with my hands, it broke and I threw the audio cable away. But I can buy an other one. Can you please explain me what do you mean by your picture? Lift which tab? Are those plastic 4 little tops movable? Last edited by blitter2; Dec 4, 2010 at 10:09 PM. |

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
Yes, the female connector inside the plug has a little metal tab on it, sticking up. The plastic tab on the plug prevents it from pulling out (i.e. the metal tab on the connector hits it). The plastic tabs are flexible (e.g. when the connector is inserted into the plug, the tabs get pushed out (by the metal tab on the connector), then snaps back into place, locking the connector in the plug). You want to just lift it enough so that the connector can be pulled back out (i.e. it clears the metal tab). I tried it with a cable I have, using a sewing needle to pry up the tab (I did it from the side (e.g. stick needle down between 2 of the tabs and then pry it up)), and it worked without much trouble.

Re: SB Live AUX_IN only right channel works.
BTW: If only the one white wire broke (and you still have the cable), you could use the white wire from the other (3 pin) plug.
Here is a picture that should make it a little clearer. It is with the larger plug (which is a little easier to work with), but the procedure is the same. There is less room to work with on the smaller plugs, which can make it harder to pry up from the end, but there is more room at the sides of tabs. Last edited by Russ; Dec 5, 2010 at 08:18 PM.
