Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
I am using the kx drivers in Windows 7 (64) with Audigy (sb350) sound card. I have the sound card separated into 3 stereo channels.
I want to control the volume of each stereo channel (2/3, 4/5, 6/7) without going into the mixer. For example, increase/decrease volume of a stereo channel by 1% or mute the channel using a hotkey. Can someone help me with this and guide me in the right direction? Thanks. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
I haven't checked exactly which volume controls can be accessed with it but I use "Sound Control" to adjust the Master volume slider in kX Audio drivers with keyboard hotkeys in Windows 7 x64 as I'm using headphones and got an old keyboard that hasn't got the media keys. It should let you select which output device's volume it should adjust.
That's probably the best software to start out with, make sure you grab the latest beta version available there for better Windows 7 support. I did look for other software as well and this was the only one I found working for Windows 7 (I had been fine with one that adjusted Win 7 vol slider but was suprised this one actually picked up kX Audio driver's vol slider which is better in my case as Windows 7 vol slider causes clipping when set too high). Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Thanks RPGWiZaRD for the suggestion. "Sound Control" software seemed very promising at first, but when I installed it (and ran in compatibility mode), I still can't see the mixer control for the wave out 2/3, 4/5, 6/7 (see attached screen shot).
I did search this forum and I remember a post where you could control the kx mixer volume with a batch file, but I could not figure out how to increase/decrease the mixer volume by 1%. The batch command seemed to set the volume to a particular level. Any other suggestions? Thanks again RPGWiZaRD for your help. Last edited by kalia; Dec 28, 2010 at 10:44 PM. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Well for me it works, 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 output devices are selectable in Sound Control software on Windows 7 x64 with an Audigy 2 ZS and I use 4/5 personally. However this was with driver version 3550, not the newly released alpha which I haven't been able to test yet on that computer. Currently I'm at parents place where I got an Audigy 1 card and just tried installing Sound Control here to check and I'm using 3551 alpha drivers and Wave 2/3 4/5 and 6/7 aren't showing up in the list for me either. Don't know if it's cuz of the newer driver or that I'm using another comp but it certainly worked on my own computer with kX Audio driver 3550. I will look into it when I get back to my appartment but that's on January 2nd and install 3551 alpha and see if the output devices won't show up then in Sound Control software. The keyboard my parents use has the multimedia keys so I have no real use of it here.
If you want you could always try installing driver 3550 to see if driver 3551 alpha is the cause for Sound Control not detecting the output devices. Last edited by RPGWiZaRD; Dec 28, 2010 at 08:09 PM. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
I originally was using 3550 driver version (because that is the one I used in Windows XP). I just updated it to the 64 bit version. I don't see the 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 output devices in Sound Control. After reading your reply, RPGWiZaRD, I tried version 3551 alpha driver without any success.
It is very strange in that I can see the devices in Windows mixer, but they don't show up in Sound Control. I do have two sb350 cards installed in this computer. I wonder if that could be causing the problem. I really can't think of anything else since it works for you, RPGWiZaRD. I will take out one sb350 card and see what happens. Thanks. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Well it could possibly some incompability bugs with the hardware... read motherboard itself... like I said it didn't show up here on parent's computer either and this motherboard uses an NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI chipset instead of Intel P55 on my own computer. Another plausible reason I could think of is that I might have a newer version of sound control installed on that other computer too. If you read the homepage for Sound Control it seems a bit fishy regarding future updates when you read the latest statement that if there's not enough interest he might not be releasing v3.00 blabla which appears to work fine with Vista/Win 7 and the newest version on the homepage is v2.48 and I know there's at least v2.84 BETA but not publicly avaible so perhaps I managed to grab a newer version somewhere for example that might be working better?
I should know better when I get back to my appartment on January 2nd and I'll see if I can possibly help you more regarding this matter then. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Well I physically took out the second card and reinstalled the kx driver (3550 and 3551) several times. No luck.
I tried a Google search to find the newer version of the SoundControl software but did not get anywhere. I had a bad feeling about upgrading to Windows 7. I should have just stuck with XP. Thanks for your help so far RPGWiZaRD. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Looks like it doesn't list Wave 2/3 4/5 6/7 here at my own computer either, but I had "Master Mixer" selected and it still works and adjusts "Master volume" inside kX Audio driver no matter which of the outputs I use in kX drivers as output device. Also notice if you adjust the volume with the Volume Control software you won't see the change in kX Audio driver Master Volume slider until you refresh/revisit the page. I have set alt + "+" for vol up and alt + "-" for vol down as hotkeys.

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
Great...now I know it is just not me.
I decided to write something from scratch to control the volume (for Wave 2/3 4/5 6/7 separately). If you are interested, I can post the file when I am done. Let me know. Thanks again RPGWiZaRD for helping out. |

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
I do not know if you have seen it, but I once posted a script (VBScript/WSH) for controlling the volume (in steps of 0.5 dB (using a range of -96 dB to +12 dB)) using kxctrl/epilog.

Re: Controlling Volume outside kx Mixer
@Russ,
I did see the script (and downloaded it a while ago), but could not figure out how to use it. I am not a programmer. I really did not want to assign hotkeys to control the volume, but rather run it from command line with parameters. Also, i was a little concerned about your caveat: Quote:
Thanks for replying Russ and also thanks for sharing the plugins and script. |
