SB (0220) Live 5.1 and Win 7 drivers

Hi there
I have just downloaded the kx drivers for my Win7 and SB card. When I view my device, it shows a Digital Audio (S/PDIF). Is this right??
Secondly, if I test my card, only thing I hear is a squeek sound or a thump sound, like the card is not installed right or something??
What can I change further please?

Machine: I7, 4 gig memory, Win 7, Sound Blaster 5.1 Live (0220)

I do not completely understand what you mean when you say "When I view my device", but yes, it is likely that your card does have a digital (SPDIF) output, accessed from the orange jack on the rear of the card (when Digital Output Only (DOO) mode is enabled).

As for your second question:
What is connected to the sound card (e.g. an analog speaker system (how many speakers?)?, a digital speaker system?, a digital receiver?, etc.)?

kX swaps analog front and rear by default, if (you are using an anlaog speaker system and) your speakers are not connected this way, then disable that option (or swap your speaker connections).

With Win7, Master Mixer should be the default device, but it has an issue with the routing of stereo audio. Try setting SPDIF/AC3 as the default device and see if that makes a difference.

If you are using the Kx "speaker test" under Win7, it's a known problem that it doesn't work. It's not a bad card or a reason to think there is something "wrong" with your setup. Just play some music or something to test your card and the driver, not the "speaker test". I think this issue started with Vista and it's a "windows problem"

As Russ mentioned, use the SPDIF/AC3 output in Windows audio panel, it works fine with analog speakers, but don't expect more than stereo output. (2.1) I'm just adding that using SPDIF/AC3 doesn't mean you need to go digital.

Hi there. Thanx for your help, I tried it (SPDIF/AC3) and my SB card works!!!
Only one problem now, can I use my 5.1 speakers, or only 2.1 like you mentioned. Thanx for your assistance, much apreciated!!
Chris

PS: Under my control panel settings, I cannot set my "configure" to play 5.1 etc...!!-The setting is faded out, no click function there to change settings!

Upmixing stereo sources to 5.1 will work, but for audio sources that have more than 2 channels, you will need to use Master Mixer.

Use the "Speaker Setup..." button on the Main page of kxmixer (or double click on the Surrounder+ plugin in kX DSP).

Hi.
Okay, I lost you there! My system (sound) is as follows......
I have a sub woofer, where my rear and front speakers plug into. I have a cable running from my sub where I control my volume from. I have only plugged in 2 speakers now, left and right. Okay, now in my settings, it only show me 2 channel something, no option to go 5.1. What am I doing wrong here?? My settings only tells me.....8 channel-16 bit something under Master Mixer. Changing it back to SPDIF/AC it gives me only 2 channel something bit?
Thanx, and sorry for being so stupid. I was used in Windows XP, I changed my sound setting easily to 2, 4 and 5.1. No it confuses me with this driver KX thing?

Re: SB (0220) Live 5.1 and Win 7 drivers

Right, only Master Mixer is multichannel capable, but it has the routing issue/bug with stereo audio, thus with audio sources that have more than 2 channels (to begin with), you need to use Master Mixer, but for audio sources that are stereo only (mp3's, etc), you will want to use SPDIF/AC3.

All the other devices (SPDIF/AC3, Wave 2/3, etc) are stereo only, but kX can upmix stereo to 5.1 (set kX Speaker setup to 5.1 with Surround enabled).

BTW: This assumes that you have more than one connection from your speakers to the sound card (if there is only one connection to the sound card, then it is not possible to get true 5.1 (and any upmixing, etc, would be done by your speaker system)).

Re: SB (0220) Live 5.1 and Win 7 drivers

Your speaker system is a 2.1 setup. Even if there is a set of jacks on the sub for two or three more speakers (4.1 or 5.1) the sound card is sending a stereo signal if there is only 1 input to the sub from the card. The speaker system is simulating 4.1 or 5.1 if this is the case so windows speaker settings aren't going to match the number of speakers.

If you drive multiple speakers from the front out/rear out/center-sub out of the card, then you get actual surround.

Re: SB (0220) Live 5.1 and Win 7 drivers

Hi there.
Me again. I sorted out nicely my sound, connected my other speakers up, and wolla, 5.1 surround again after 2 years. I installed a game, rebooted my Win7, and now everything is back again to where I started with this forum, just a squeeking sound in my speakers, and just a loud noice. I changed back to Master, back to SPDIF/AC3, nothing now??
Feeling like taking out my SB card again.
Sorry for the stupid questions!!

If the KX mixer icon is in the device tray (it should be) then right click on it and "reset device setting" or "reset global settings" (or some wording like that, I'm not sitting in front of a KX system right now) See if that brings the sound back.

If you don't have the KX mixer in the tray, then there's something else going on.....
