installation help
hi guys,
I'm new here and was hoping for some help. I love all the features of the kx project and have been looking forward to trying it out. However, Ive been having trouble installing it. I have Win 7 and an SB0350 card (I think it's an Audigy 2 ZS card) in a Dell GX620 (Pentium 4). I have 2 initial issues: 1. Fist off - I get no sound. I tried the speakers on both the front an rear and still no luck. 2. A weird thing is that my card is labelled SB0350. But when I install the driver, it says that it's installing for an SB0243. I tried both the newest kx install (3550). And I also tried the latest stable release (3538). -- same results. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's going on and what I could try? Thanks, Steve |

Which device is set as the default in the Windows Control Panel? (With 3550) Try setting SPDIF/AC3 as the default and see if you get sound. Quote:

Re: installation help
Hey Russ,
1. That was it. I made SPDIF/AC3 my default and I got sound -- excellent. Now I just have to figure out how all that routing and the crossover works. 2. The card is only Labelled Audigy 2 (not ZS). But, it does say model sb0350 on the circuit board. That's a little screwey. Not 100% sure, but I guess this is probably just an Audigy 2 and not a ZS card - oh well. Anyway, I'm glad it's working now. Do you know if a VST host program like Console will work in the the kx project environment? Thanks again Russ - great suggestion, Steve |

Re: installation help
VST's do not work within the DSP, like a KX plugin does, but any VST host program should work with a card using the KX driver. VST's are not within the DSP, it is a software environment that outputs to your soundcard.

Re: installation help
Glad to hear it is working for you...
What was the default previously? Master Mixer should be the default, but unfortunately there is (currently) a routing bug (with Windows 7/Vista) which effects the routing of stereo audio, and is probably the reason why you did not get sound previously (assuming Master Mixer was the default). With future versions of kX, you will probably want to use Master Mixer (assuming the bugs get worked out). As for the card model, sometimes the model number on the board is not the actual model number, as different models might use the same circuit board. If you still have the sticker on the rear of the card with the serial number, that should indicate the actual model number. |

Re: installation help
Hey Russ,
My default was not master mixer. It was set to "Speakers-SoundMax integrated digital audio" I'll check the back label later when I finish updating. The card was given to me. It may even be a Dell OEM (not sure). But if it is, it's in a Dell machine. This seems obvious. But, thought I'd ask just in case. When I run Windows Update, it asks if I want to install "Creative Audigy Audio Processor driver update (WDM)". I should not install this - correct? Thanks, Steve |

Re: installation help
Hey Russ,
Out of curiosity, I tried Master Mixer as the default. I got sound. But after about a minute or so, I heard crackling and pops. I guess that's from the bug that you were talking about earlier. By the way - I see there is a crossover offered as one of the effects. Too bad it only has 2nd and 4th order xo's (with my drivers I have always had better luck with odd order xo's). But, I still would like to play around with the kx's crossover. Is there a guide or a tutorial anywhere for using the crossover effect? Thanks, Steve |

Re: installation help
No, the noise is a another issue... Playing with the buffer settings might help...
I do not know of any tutorials for the crossovers, but if you have any questions about them (or any other plugins), ask in the Effects and the DSP part of the forum, and someone should be able answer them. |

Re: installation help
Also dig up LeMury's guide to the DSP. Learn how to build only what you need and you'll see how easy it is to use KX.
