Problems with SB Live! and NIC Interrupts
I am having real trouble with my SB Live card nad my Network Card 'fighting' over the same interrupt.
Neither of the drivers will aloow me to specify a 'manual' interrupt through control panel, and on a normal install they both try and use Interupt 11. I can disable IRQ 11 from the Plug and PLay list in the BIOS, but then they both jump on IRQ10. I disabled 10 and 11 and they then went to another (5 I think) I have at least 3 free interrupts on my PC (I have disabled everything I don't need like serial ports, USK, parallel ports etc), but they always try and fight over one interrupt. The NIC is an SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI (SMC 1211 series) Is there any way of forcing the KX drivers to use a different IRQ ?? Has anyone got any other ideas on how to resolve this issue ?? (Currently I've got the NOC disabled so I can carry on with my audio work, but I need the network connection so that I can backup my data !!) Any help greatly appreciated...... Thanks PaulF |

Have you tried to move audio card and/or NIC from their slots to other slots?
Try one or more combinations... Bye, TommyBoy. |

Well, guess you're running Win2k or XP. Then it's fully normal with devices sharing IRQ:s. If you didn't disable it by picking some other HAL than the ACPI one when you installed your OS that is.
I'd try downloading the latest driver for your NIC, and any other device sharing the same IRQ, and install them. Poorly written drivers can cause some trouble when it comes to IRQ sharing sometimes. Also, updating your BIOS might help. If you're using win9x or NT4, or using the standard computer HAL, try manually assigning IRQ:s to the soundcard's and the NIC's PCI slots from your computer's BIOS. There should be a setting named something like "PnP aware OS" in the BIOS aswell. To be on the safe side, set it to "No", to have your BIOS configure IRQ:s. |

Thanks for the ideas....
I've just tried fiddling with the BIOS settings again, but still no joy. Looks like I need to try physically moving the cards around (which is a pain because the PC is built in under my studio desk )Anyway, I'll have to set aside some time to try that. By the way I'm running W98SE, and I'm sure the confict is a problem, because I found I was having to raise the latency on the ASIO drivers to avoid glitches (when I have had it running at the minimum before) and also I tried to copy some data across the Network to it and it was running at approx 1/4 of the speed I would expect - which is how I found the problem. Anyway, I'm running on switching hardware profiles at the moment (which is not too bad), but does anyone know how to set W98SE to select one profile by default after a certain timeout (mine just sits and waits for you to select one or the other !) Thanks again for your help PaulF |

Take a look at your motherboard manual to see what slots share IRQs, so you can plan ahead where are you moving each one of your cards...

you cannot re-assign IRQs when using ACPI kernel
